Are any of you all photography nuts? I love taking pictures, and the best thing I ever did to feed my habit was buy a digital camera. There are many things that intrigue me enough to shoot pictures of, most frequently, unique architecture, trains, cars, and just about anything that looks unusual or interesting. In the 3 years since I' bought my little camera, I've taken close to 4,000 pictuers with it!

...I'm sort of like Ray in the movie "Rain man" taking pictures of everything he sees during his trip across country1

Yeah, I've been pretty into photography for the last couple years. It started by accident, I just got a cheap digital camera to take snapshots, but then some of them turned out really well, and I really got into it. Most of my pictures are of abandoned things: cars, houses, big machines, factories, refrigerators, anything like that. I like to take pictures of anything interesting and/or unusual, but there's just something about abandoned stuff that really resonates with me. It feels like there's some sort of mortality there, and I feel like I'm seeing something secret and private, something everyone else has forgotten about or ignored.

So far, in the last 5 years, I've accumulated about 6200 pictures. Granted about 75% of them aren't really any good, but that still leaves a few good ones.

I'd like to get more into it but rarely have occasion to. The NY Auto Show is good for about 200 pictures each year, but that's about it. I can't say I'm anywhere near professional-grade, but I have taken a couple of nice pictures with my li'l Canon Powershot. I'm starting to get good results from my cell phone, too.

I suppose I am a bit of a photographic geek. I have two (pentax) film based SLRs with about six lenses, A (digital SLR) Nikon D50 with 3 lenses. I have a little Olympus for when I can’t be bothered to take a big camera with me. I also have a few collectable cameras but I don’t use these much unless there is some special event, and a few old digitals and the obligatory phone camera.

I also have a colour darkroom so I can process and print my own film. I tend to use labs to print digital.

I mainly photograph urban landscapes. I have about 4000 images on film and about 6000 on digital.

Started to get into it heaviy a few years ago, then backed off because of school.
Mostly use a 35 mm panoramic and a 2.5 X 35mm zoom.Have an old Olympia with a
3.5 telephoto but haven't really learned to use it.

A few good outdoor shots and lots of bad ones. :D

I love taking photographs! I think one of the best Christmas presents I've ever gotten is my digital camera. I've had it for over two years and I've taken thousands of pictures of almost anything. Specially urban ruins, self-portraits -and, of course, my little nephews.

I love taking photos. I still use my 20+ year old Canon AE-1, manual focus and manual rewind and all of that mess. But I could never find a camera to take photos the way that one does. I went to a camera shop one day to buy a digital and the guy behind the counter said that he would be more than happy to sell me one and even buy my Canon, but he said I wouldn't be happy with the clarity, sharpness, and color after using the old Canon. I know the digitals are getting better every day, so it's about time to think about buying one again. I've seen beautiful pics lately with the digitals.

I like my digital camera (Canon EOS10D), but knowing what I do about digital camera at this point I'm not sure I'd give up on film yet if I was you. Digital cameras have definite advantages, with a 1GB memory card I can shoot 150 pictures without having to reload a roll of film, and each one can be at a different ISO speed. Editing digital photos (by this I mean color correction, contrast, other such adjustments) is often easier, and they can be made to look very good. However I believe few if any digital cameras can currently match the "resolution" of 35mm film, and so the images are not generally as sharp, especially if blown up. Also keep in mind that most digital SLRs have an image sensor that's smaller than 35mm and this effectively multiplies the focal length of all your lenses, generally this magnification is in the range of about 1.5x or 1.6x in the case of my Canon. This can be annoying if you want a really wide angle lens.

The way I see it, it's a trade-off, with digital you get more user-friendliness and a few more options but you have to give up a little bit of image quality to get it. The way digital cameras are headed I don't think it'll be too long before they can meet and exceed the quality of 35mm, but they aren't there yet.

Thanks for the input Lygophile. I think I will hold off for awhile, and I have grown pretty attached to my old Canon.

I like photography.
My current [digital] camera is a silver SONY cybershot DSC-L1 with a Carl Zeiss lens.
I like looking at things through the screen, and taking photos of anything interesting.
But cats are what I especially like taking photos of.

I love taking pictures. Four years ago I bought a Sony Mavica MVC-CD1000, which writes about 200 1600x1200 pics to a mini-cd, and has 10x optical zoom. I've taken about 15,000 pictures with it.

The majority of the pics are of rock band Max Creek, but there are lots of others.

See some of my pics at my website, http://scoogy.com

I've got a Fuji S5000 that I leave at full resolution (6MP) all the time, because I don't tend to fill the 256Mb memory card (173 pictures) while I'm away from a computer.

The camera is only half the story though. You need some way of storing and sharing pictures. If you've got a DSL connection it's worth setting up your own web server (you could pay for hosting, but it costs extra, won't use the bandwidth you're paying for, and will be a pain to upload to)

If you get an old powermac that'll run OSX (plenty of old G3s + G4s on ebay), installing PHP and MySQL is pretty easy, then you can use a really good gallery program like Gallery[url], and put all your pictures online at full resolution for friends and family to look at.

Mine's at [url]www.polar-lights.org.uk

I got into photography thanks to my grandfather. I've still got most of his massive collection of slides to scan, from his travels all over the world, and lots of family events like weddings, anniversaries and christenings.

I also love taking pictures - mainly of banal things, but also nice places and stuff I see. I have a Canon PowerShot S80. It's great fun - especially when you can share your efforts with others afterwards. :D

I got a Kodak EasyShare DX6490 for Christmas in '04. For about a year I didn't do much with it except take family photos now and then.
I recently became fascinated with taking "calendar" shots of flowers and other things of nature. You know, big bright close ups that look like those huge wall calendars you can buy at Barnes & Noble, or wherever. I looped a bunch of them into a screensaver for my computer. :D
