I love taking photos. I still use my 20+ year old Canon AE-1, manual focus and manual rewind and all of that mess. But I could never find a camera to take photos the way that one does. I went to a camera shop one day to buy a digital and the guy behind the counter said that he would be more than happy to sell me one and even buy my Canon, but he said I wouldn't be happy with the clarity, sharpness, and color after using the old Canon. I know the digitals are getting better every day, so it's about time to think about buying one again. I've seen beautiful pics lately with the digitals.
I like my digital camera (Canon EOS10D), but knowing what I do about digital camera at this point I'm not sure I'd give up on film yet if I was you. Digital cameras have definite advantages, with a 1GB memory card I can shoot 150 pictures without having to reload a roll of film, and each one can be at a different ISO speed. Editing digital photos (by this I mean color correction, contrast, other such adjustments) is often easier, and they can be made to look very good. However I believe few if any digital cameras can currently match the "resolution" of 35mm film, and so the images are not generally as sharp, especially if blown up. Also keep in mind that most digital SLRs have an image sensor that's smaller than 35mm and this effectively multiplies the focal length of all your lenses, generally this magnification is in the range of about 1.5x or 1.6x in the case of my Canon. This can be annoying if you want a really wide angle lens.
The way I see it, it's a trade-off, with digital you get more user-friendliness and a few more options but you have to give up a little bit of image quality to get it. The way digital cameras are headed I don't think it'll be too long before they can meet and exceed the quality of 35mm, but they aren't there yet.
