I know, to the best of my knowledge, that no one IRL takes me seriously.

Reasons:
-As a small child, I was in the same school where my mother works there to this
day as a teacher. Her colleagues still either treat me horribly
or treat me as if I have the mental capacity of well, a little kid.

-People think I am simple. That is not true.
I am more "street-smart" than most people think.
And most people refuse to believe/don't understand I have AS and epilepsy.

What say you, fellow members?

Do people take you seriously?

I am told many times by my parents and others to quit being simple. However, I don't really understand what they mean by that.

Most people don't take me seriously. Only in matters of history or technology.

Often too seriously, unless I just don't see it. I think occasionally people think I'm just rattling off stuff I made up but not often, I just get that impression. I'm not even sure they think that.

I don't understand what is meant by 'being simple' either :?

Yeah, me too. If I say something in jest people think I'm ripping on them.

I guess I joke a lot, so people don't take me that seriously. I don't know what people think of me though.

People (with the exception of a few friends and family) usually take me seriously when I am joking and assume that I am joking when I'm serious. It doesn't help that I'm often laughing when others are crying and crying when others are laughing. In one of these situations where I failed to suppress my laughter and felt bad about it, a close friend comforted me by saying that death is always funny. People who don't agree just haven't seen enough of it.

It seems like my classmates either assume that I'm a ditz (simple, perhaps) or arrogant and rude.

I've been told I'm too serious because I can't tell if others are joking sometimes...

No. People often ignore me, or laugh and pat me. I suppose I've brought it on myself, as well. Better be funny and entertaining than bitter and clueless.
I have some friends though, and I am pretty sure when they do it it's in good humour. I still wish I could be respected more, though.

Depending on the situation though, they are days when people don't take me seriously and other times they do because I tend to be very honest with my opinions.

How seriously people take me depends on how well they know me. When I first meet people, or know them only a little bit they don't usually take my very seriously because as two friends pointed out "you look like a twelve year old" (I'm almost 20) and "you're the smartest blond I've ever met." Since I suppose the majority of people see me in that fashion: a twelve year old blond girl, I would assume I am automatically labeled either innocent and childish at best or stupid at worst because of prevailing stereotypes. Once people get to know me, however, they tend to take me too seriously because of my straightforward nature. As other people have mentioned, a good number of my friends and even my own family take my jokes seriously.

When I was younger, people who did not know me tended to not take me seriously. However people who knew me well, as in , who had spent a significant amount of time around me, had a tendency to start listening when I said something.

Now that I'm older I don't seem to surprise people nearly as much though.
