Is anyone else into metal? Not mainstream metal like Metallica and Megadeth, I mean the semi-underground stuff like black metal, death metal, folk metal, etc. Metal is really great once you get into it. Many metal musicians are influenced by classical or progressive music.

I like Cradle of Filth and some Dimmu Borgir, but I guess they would be classed as main stream.

I like metal that has a lot of melodies and classical influences, like Children of Bodom, Symphony X, and Nightwish. Dream Theater is the best though!! !

I like Nightwish, think they're pretty cool. I also like HIM - have you heard of them? :?:

Haha. Good old Norwegian Black Metal. Most of black metal is ridiculously absurd but there are also many good black metal bands. I personally am more of an extreme prog metal type person (as in Opeth). I also like Bathory-esque metal like Bathory, of course, and Morrigan.

Yip, black metal [and related] is probably my second favourite genre. Stuff like Mütiilation, Moonblood, Falkenbach, Immortal, Sacrificia Mortuorum, Aäkon Këëtrëh, Elend, Arkona, Ulver and Horna.

I used to love metal!

In my teens I was heavily into bands such as Celtic Frost, Voivod, Venom, Sodom, Destruction, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory (R.I.P. Quorthon)

My taste for metal faded away in the early 90's, but around 2002 I became interested again and amassed a collection of new music. My newfound fascination died out rather quickly and I rarely listen to metal these days. When I do listen, it is because I want the nostalgia and will listen to old metal, music created in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Some modern metal bands I’ve liked would be The Crown, Warhammer, Opeth, God Dethroned, and Meggido. I also like Burzum, however Varg Vikernes is a murderer and his racial philosophy is repulsive. It’s a shame, as some of his music is great, especially his non-metal album Hlidskjalf. However, knowing the kind of person behind it makes it difficult to listen to.

One of my favorites is Summoning. All their albums are Tolkien-themed and (to me) is the only music to ever capture the feeling of the LoTR story.

For black metal fans, I highly suggest reading the book “The Lords of Chaos,” by Moynihan & Soderlind. The book is an in-depth look at the lives of some of the people who make the music. Many of them are absolutely, positively, 100% insane.

I went off metal big-time with all that "scooped", no solos, sound-alike numetal BS that took over in the 90s. What's the point of metal without any guitar solos for the love of all that's holy?

The reason why that i dont listen to Burzum is because Varg is a neo-nazi but if he wasnt i would probably be listening to burzum

Slayer :D Define metal, there's alot of debate over what metal is, ie, is Slipknot metal? Of course it depends if you like them or not as to how you'll class them. But you asked for non-mainstream and I don't think any of the stuff I listen to is not mainstream. Pantera :) .. and stuff :P
