I used to love metal!
In my teens I was heavily into bands such as Celtic Frost, Voivod, Venom, Sodom, Destruction, Mercyful Fate, and Bathory (R.I.P. Quorthon)
My taste for metal faded away in the early 90's, but around 2002 I became interested again and amassed a collection of new music. My newfound fascination died out rather quickly and I rarely listen to metal these days. When I do listen, it is because I want the nostalgia and will listen to old metal, music created in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Some modern metal bands I’ve liked would be The Crown, Warhammer, Opeth, God Dethroned, and Meggido. I also like Burzum, however Varg Vikernes is a murderer and his racial philosophy is repulsive. It’s a shame, as some of his music is great, especially his non-metal album Hlidskjalf. However, knowing the kind of person behind it makes it difficult to listen to.
One of my favorites is Summoning. All their albums are Tolkien-themed and (to me) is the only music to ever capture the feeling of the LoTR story.
For black metal fans, I highly suggest reading the book “The Lords of Chaos,” by Moynihan & Soderlind. The book is an in-depth look at the lives of some of the people who make the music. Many of them are absolutely, positively, 100% insane.
