just what the title says. I was talking with my ex today, and she thinks that I suffer from Depression and Bipolar I Disorder, on top of my Aspergers. I was just wondering how many other people are just Aspies or have other problesm as well?

I plugged "bipolar and autism" and it brought up About 2,090,000 results (0.47 seconds), so I guess the answer is yes. Personally I tend toward depression.

Depression, anxiety, and ADHD are the most common comorbids, based on several studies.

I agree with what's already been said. I was diagnosed by clinical (not bipolar) depression. None of the chemical cures have made any difference. And they say that my depression is more situation based which means that I am not exactly clinically depressed . The doctors say that my problems simply a result of AS: they are situation based. Take me away from the situation - in my case going across to Ireland relives the depression.

I'm asperger's with bipolar. While there's not an especially high correlation of bipolar with ASD, depression and /or anxiety are commonly known to be co-morbid.

I was tested for ADHD when I was younger, but that turned out to be false. I dunno about now. I do know that I have many OCD tendencies though...Not so much germs but just having to do things a certain way...

AD(H)D, OCD, movement disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and conduct disorders all commonly occur along with autistic spectrum disorders.

I know officially I have the ADHD/ADD, as well as depression on top of it. Unofficially I can EASILY pass for schizo-affective at times as well as APD.

I definitely have other disorders on top of my autism. There's obsessive compulsive disorder and purely obsessional OCD. I also suffer deep depression, panic attacks, anxiety, paranoia. On top of being blessed with a great imagination I am at the same time also cursed with a tendency to think too much, introspect and analyze inwardly to death. I'm too emotionally sensitive for my own good. I could list more but I'm afraid if I continue I'll go into emo overdrive. :(

I have a different view. I think people who are not "fully" informed on asperger see some of our behaviors actions etc and label according to what they know.

Depression and anxiety - very common in all disabilities even ones such as multiple schlerosis which my father had. They never said it was this something else over here kind of thing. They had common sense and knew it was just sort of like a part of what to expect with a stressful situation.

Manic - We think in logic/obssessive/repetitive ways. Like we may want to talk ALOT on interest. They are confusing this with racing thoughts and manic.

Not saying co-morbids dont exist but almost every autistic I read writings from is being told things like this. I think it is non-trained professional (as far as ASD is concerned) filling in blanks with what they "think" they see.

If you compare criteria to ASD to other labels it is easy to see how they could sort of mistake it if they do not have a really good understanding of ASD.

I have severe reactions to medications. Very adverse reactions. If they put me on something to calm me down - I behaved very manic like. Then they turn and call it manic. My mom threw out the drugs and poof went away the behavior. Not saying this is so for ALL of us but we are a hypersensitive group and we should now this when we try meds or if we see it happening to one of our own.

You all may hate me for this but been in system along time and believe me... The Drs ARE PAID to get you one drugs. Our system is more broken than any cow shute Temple Grandin ever saw. Always question if there is "another reason" behind why they say what they say. I have met teachers who worked in Drs office who literally saw them get leather jackets to push drugs. In real life as a client. It is super money oriented.

I have literally been on the floor in hospital with no bp and rescue squad called -- almost died a few years ago. The idiots still made me take the same drug the next day and yes I fainted again. I was so sick that I could not hold my head up. I was drooling and in pain. Beating my face with my fist for hours until it was black and blue. They did not care they just added more and more drugs. Threw out the drugs and yes I have autism but it got 100 times worse on drugs. What happened to me can happen to others in a smaller way. Make sense?

Sorry but read on bipolar (real bipolar) Its very easy to see the real thing. I mean these people can not sleep for 4 or 5 days BUT function with more energy then those who are well rested. They talk soooooooo fast that you cant understand a word they say and most does not make sense. ASD may talk fast but it is not jabber. I have seen real bipolar in hospitals and it is super notice able.

Yes I am one who thinks they are over diagnosing and that hurt the ones who really have a true disability. Really observe around you and really see... Everyone thinks they have a mental illness now. That is super wrong to do that to people. Everyone i know.. I mean evry person I know is told what you all are sharing in this thread. something is wrong and peope should question that.

Just want to add before you all kill me that i am not saying this stuff is not real and you guys dont have it but when it comes to ASD they are mixing up ASD with other lables.

Everyone i know know is on psych meds.

Everyone. I am sorry -- I grew up with these people and they were not mentally ill etc. I was the kid banging my head on the floor and acting very different and even I can see this. They are medicating normal life. Not good.

Sorry for the rant. Just upset. But not at anyone hear. Just venting

Doesn't AS assosciated a lot with OCD?

I have AS and paranoid schizophrenia. Also had ADHD as a kid (and still have concentration problems) and apparently I have OCD traits, as well as a lingering moderate depression.

I get too many labels chucked at me =/

My psychatrist seems to be reluctant to put labels on me. My therapist said if you can't treat it with meds, it doesn't need to be diagnosed.

Couldn't you also say that people with multiple disorders are more easily noticed than people with only ASD? I'm not avocating this, but merely showing a different viewpoint. But maybe people with only ASD are much better in hiding it than people with multiple disorders?

Food for thought....The Personality Disorders

The Impact of ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders on Temperament, Character, and Personality Development

Download pdf to see the charted results. A controlled study, they had several groups, made of those with:

1 - Autism only (mainly HFA/AS)
2 - Those with ADHD only
3 - Those with Autism and ADHD
4 - "NT" controls

Quote:
CONCLUSIONS: ADHD and autism spectrum disorders are associated with specific temperament configurations and an increased risk of personality disorders and deficits in character maturation.

Those with Autism only were shown to have a high prevalence of the following personality disorders:
- Obsessive Compulsive (42.6%)
- Avoidant (34%)
- Schizoid (31.9%)
- Paranoid (25.5%)
- Schizotypal (23.4%)
- Depressive (19.1%)

(For Borderline, those with autism scored 10.6%.)

Those with ADHD only:
- Borderline (37%)
- Anti-Social (30.9%)
- Dependent (25.9%)
- Depressive (25.9%)
- Paranoid (22.2%)
- Avoidant (22.2%)

Those with Autism and ADHD:
- Obsessive Compulsive (29.6%)
- Paranoid (25.9%)
- Schizoid (22.9%)
- Dependent (22.2%)
- Anti-Social (18.5%)
- Depressive (18.5%)

All patients, including those with neither ADHD or an autism spectrum disorder.
- Borderline (23.6%)
- Obsessive Compulsive (23.6%)
- Avoidant (22.4%)
- Depressive (21.8%)
- Paranoid (21.2%)
- Schizoid (19%)

Some of my notes:
* No Histrionic PD found (nor in the control)
* No Anti-Social in the ASD only group
* Borderline PD is found in ASD only, but with low incidence. When you add ASD to ADHD, Borderline PD goes way down (almost as low as with ASD only), as well as Anti-Social PD. Also when you add ASD to ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive PD takes a fair jump up, and to a lesser extent, so does Paranoid PD, Schizoid and Schizotypal. Avoidant goes down when ADHD is added to ASD, which is lower than both groups on their own.
