Can anyone else hear a high pitched noise when the TV is on but muted or the cable box is off? I find it kind of irritating, but it can be useful to make sure to turn the TV off and save on electricity.

YES!

Also when I was a toddler, I would have an instant meltdown whenever my parents brought me into an electronics store with dozens of televisions on (due to the high pitched whine that nobody else seemed to be able to hear). Mercifully, I'm not as good as hearing those high frequencies as an adult.

Yeah, it's a very high frequency. Once before school I told my family "Shouldn't we turn off the TV?" The TV was on but the screen wasn't... they couldn't believe I could tell.

I can hear the noise on the tv and other electronics. It's really loud and gives me a headache. :(

In my house the worst is either the water cooler or the freezer, which makes such a loud noise that I can hear it through my wall. Nobody else in my family can hear the noise, or they aren't bothered by it.

Another really irritating one is my DS charger. And our new toaster is obnoxiously loud while it toasts. It also violently launches the finished toast halfway across the counter.

Luckily my Grandma never took me to any electronics stores, so that never happened to me. lol

I don't think my family ever thinks anything of it for some reason. But I usually don't say anything and just turn it off myself.

I've noticed that some TV's are louder than others, but they don't tend to bother me very much. These days it's even less of a problem with the popularity of LCD's instead of CRT's.
Not only can I hear it from TV's, but charging capacitors, such as those in camera flashes make a similar sound

I hear those sounds coming from TV's all the time too, I heard that it's easier for young people to hear it, and the older you get, the harder it is to hear. It's probably because hearing, like other senses diminish as you get older, and us aspies have ultra-sensitive hearing. My parents can't hear it either.

CRTs used for television operate with a horizontal scanning frequencies of 15,734 Hz (for NTSC systems) or 15,625 Hz (for PAL systems).[48] These frequencies are at the upper range of human hearing and are inaudible to many people; some people will perceive a high-pitched tone near an operating television CRT.[49] The sound is due to magnetostriction in the magnetic core of the flyback transformer.

That's from the Wikipedia page on "Cathode ray tube"

I can tell it's on but it's not a high pitched noise for me. It's just a background noise I can detect.

Yes, I also hear a relatively loud high pitched noise coming from the computer sometimes, louder than the TV.

Yes I can hear them and sometimes they are annoying. Some are louder than others. I used to think everyone could hear them until I was 21.

Yep, that's the flyback whining, a high-frequency transformer used to produce the high voltage in CRT sets.

[EDIT] elaraith already hit this point.

I've also heard modern electronics that make a high-pitched whine during standby. Poor engineering if you ask me.

I can't just hear the TV, I can hear if a person has been near a TV because they sound static...y... It's totally bizarre. Mum didn't understand my hatred of the high pitched noise because she couldn't hear it (she's partially deaf anyway) and was confused when she came home one day to find me hitting and throttling our television! It turned out there was actually something wrong with the television, a main part of it was about to blow! If I hadn't noticed the noise the TV would have stopped working

Yes, not just from the tv but from other electronics as well.

I always could hear that someone had turned the TV on, before the sound actually came out of the speakers, even from another room.

Also, you know that ozone is produced by high powered electical items. Well, can anyone else smell this? Not from the TV necessarily, but certainly in an electricals store. Actually, I had a Furby that I could smell it on, and that's not high voltage!

If it's a box TV, then yes, but I don't recall noticing it on any flat screen TV.
