[poll] Have you ever been in trouble with the law?

This poll is for aspies and I was curious if anyone here have had legal problems or near legal problems. I'm not talking about lawsuits or getting caught by speed cops or meter maids, I mean the kind of trouble where you go down town in handcuffs.

Note that the poll is about problems with the law and not whether you actually did anything wrong. Pick the option that is the worst that has happened to you.

yes, in 'trouble' - there's not mine! And been off sick from work since May and until september

I had near trouble. A neighbor accused me of a felony and got two buddies to sign papers saying they saw me do it. Under Florida law, that is probable cause for arrest. The cop pulled out his cuffs and came toward me, but decided against it given that my accuser was a convicted felon.

Nope, no problems with the boys in blue at all.

I used to have a shoplifting habit, but i got over it.

4 years of shoplifting and i was never caught!

I had a close call once (during high school) but I have never done anything to hurt anyone.

I once spent a night locked in a cell in Glasgow with a bunch of priests. Been arrested and held overnight a couple of times. I'm a sucker for a good cause.
I have the greatest respect for our police, mind.

I suppose you could say i'm an "aspie" even though i've never been officially Dx-ed with AS.

I fit most of the common characteristics of NVLD (many of which are shared by alot of people with AS) and i've also been diagnosed with schizoid or schizotypal (depending on the particular evaluation) personality disorder. Iow....for all intents and purposes, i'm an "aspie" save in name alone.


And I have been in some relatively minor trouble with the law. I was convicted of two DUI's when I was in my early twenties and had a few other alcohol-related misdemeanors (disorderly conduct, public intoxication) when I was in my late teens/early twenties.

I'm certainly not proud of any of these things and I was guilty as charged in all cases. I had a bit of a drinking problem (that is to say my drinking obviously CAUSED ME PROBLEMS) from about 18-24 though I really don't think I was a defacto alcoholic. I quit cold turkey after my last DUI (at 24) and haven't been in any legal trouble (aside from the rare speeding ticket) since.

I spent a few days in county jail as a result of my DUI's, paid fines, attended compulsory AA meetings (which I utterly despised and found completely worthless)and had my license suspended for a year on both counts.



County jail really wasn't a terrible experience...I actually got along with all the other inmates (most were there for similiar minor infractions in any case.) The food certainly left something to be desired (though it wasn't much worse than your average high school cafeteria food) and it was just boring and uneventful beyond that. I just stayed in my cell most of the time and slept. The TV was always tuned to some sporting event or a stupid sit-com or something and reading material was prohibited. So it's not like there was much to do aside from gab with other inmates for a few minutes or sleep.

So my experiences with the law weren't terribly traumatic or anything. But they certainly were unpleasant enough to make me want to stay well-within the bounds of the law (my leadfoot still places me a bit out of those bounds at times though ) and i've kept my nose perfectly clean ever since. So the criminal penalties actually did what they are supposed to do in my case. Drunk driving can result in much more dire consequences than a mere DUI conviction ofcourse. So i'm very lucky that my two DUI convictions were the worst consequences of my bad judgement.


I'm no saint....but at least my record is not as bad as some other NT's (and one other Aspie I know who was convicted of possessing child pornography ) i've met. Not to mention people who've supposedly done some very horrible things and never been charged for them. I actually know one guy who MIGHT be a serial killer, but there's absolutely no evidence (physical or circumstantial) that he is.

A lot of you guys are talking about trouble with the law while you were attending school. I have to say that if I was going to public school these days, I would most surely be arrested.

Most of my school days were in the 70's and the schools didn't freak out over everything like they do now. There was no such thing as school cops. I did some pretty bad things, got caught, and the worst that happened was that I got sent home. One time I pulled a knife on a bully. Another time, I actually stabbed someone in the arm. (I totally regret the latter.) Today, not only would I have been expelled, but probably thrown in juvy. I remember another kid brought a real 22 revolver, and the teacher simply took it away from him and put it in her drawer with all the other toys she took away from students.

Heck, high school was almost like a military base with all the students openly carrying guns and knives. I got yelled at by a teacher because he said I wasn't cleaning my gun properly - not because I actually had one. Try any of that today and you'll likely be telling it to the judge.

Close call involving police error once and another time a bogus threat accusation from a classmate, never went to court.

I beat up a kid after school who bullied me from 7th grade to 10th grade. I had a growth spurt when I was 16 and was now bigger than him. His parents tried to have me arrested because I broke his orbital socket. The police told the mother they were not going to arrest me because the bully and I were both underage and we were both mutual combatants. They said he did not have to cross the street to fight me he could have got on his bus and went home but he chosed to fight, They tried to sue my parents for medical bills but the judge was not going to hear the parents claim their child was an angel. We presented the judge with documents from the school that showed constant attacks against me by the bully including the one time he had pushed me down a flight of stairs resulting in 8 stiches in my knee. The judge told my parents they were saints for not sueing the school or the bully's parents for that attack and damages. The bully's parents did not even bring any of the medical bills so he dismissed their case saying the bully had it coming.

No. I obey the law to the best of my understanding as someone who isn't a lawyer.

It really bothers me when people try to pressure me into things such as crossing the street against the light, or going over the speed limit because "everyone is and you have to keep up with the flow of traffic."
