How do I go about getting back on some form of medication (e.g. antidepressants)? I have health insurance through my company but I don't even know where to begin...

Just your regular doctor is a good beginning, either an internist or a family practitioner.

Something to keep in mind, some antidepressants you want to be careful coming off of. And it's good to have a doctor you can halfway talk with.

If you are on the autism spectrum, I would recommend obtaining psychiatric medications from a good (emphasis on the good) psychiatrist or neurpsych, not your PCP. They don't know their stuff well enough, and they don't know how the autistic brain/body responds to medications (which can be differently than the nonautistic brain/body), and they can screw up. Then again, so can psychiatrists. Do you research first and ask the doctor some basic questions and make sure you're comfortable with him and his answers to your questions before you take medications prescribed by said doctor. Personally, my neuropsych has a son with autism and really knows her stuff... so I'd try finding someone like that.

You want a treatment approach you can ping-pong back and forth with. Okay, this is not working too well, let's move sideways and try this other thing.

The problem I have with some counselors (some, not all), is that they become married to their first diagnosis. You tell them something's not working, and then basically say, well, let's try it some more. I'd rather go sideways and try something fresh.

If it's really imperative to get some medication, maybe you could go to the hospital and have them prescribe it, if you don't want to wait for an appointment.

Ask your primary care provider for a referral to a psychiatrist. The PCP is probably trained to do a simple depression screening and can tell whether you need the aforesaid referral.
