It's like learning to communicate with people from a different culture.

Personally, I studied sociology, psychology, and anthropology to help me understand people and their motivations. So my theory is solid, but my practical skills are still shaky. :)

yes we belong to a big minority. but try to see it also in this perspective:

there are even three times more autistics in this world than jews... and how much more do we hear in our daily lives about the jewish people? how many more problems are related to their minority in this world? and how much money is worldwide spend on either attacking or protecting them... ??

it boggles the mind. at least it boggles my mind...

PS: this post is probably very political incorrect. but it is NOT intended to start any religious quarrel with anybody, nor any expression of pro- or antisemitism tendencies form my part.

i think this statistic is incorrect, despite the impression the media might give, scientests still agree that the percentage of the population with autism is under 0.5%, I dont think there are more autistic people in the world then there are Jews

is it?

Quote:
According to the Jewish Agency for Israel, as of 2007, there were 13–14 million Jews worldwide, 5.4 million of whom lived in Israel, 5.3 million in the United States, and the remainder distributed in communities of varying sizes around the world; this represents 0.2% of the current estimated world population.[1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew

Quote:
Most recent reviews tend to estimate a prevalence of 1–2 per 1,000 for autism and close to 6 per 1,000 for ASD;[8] because of inadequate data, these numbers may underestimate ASD's true prevalence.[46]

isn't 0.2% one-third of 0.6% :?:

This is largely a matter of where you trace the line between ASD and BAP.

Most studies show that "autism" is a continuam that fades in the normality, not a discret condition that you have or not.

ah! okay! :-)

but that number is probably more correct than the 0.6% that is consensus now... many research indicates that the number really is that high... and that means that the ASD minority is five times as large as the jewish minority...

no matter what... it boggles my mind. i think we should have a country too.

nt inergration is really quite easy, but it seems to me that anyone who asks these question is not truly interested in exploring the answers so i'm not going to go into detail.

Are they passionate, really? They may display passion, where we may not display it so obviously. But I certainly have passion. In fact, I believe I have passion more than most people do, because my interests are so narrow, and because I spend a lot more time thinking and analyzing than the average person does... even if it can take more time for me to come to conclusions. One of the core defining features of the spectrum are special interests. I don't know about you, but I light up and get all excited when I actually have a chance to talk about something I'm interested in with someone who is also actually interested. That's passion... we've just trained ourselves to repress it on a day-to-day basis because usually, no one cares.

You don't realise how high of a percentage that is. Well, I don't know if it's necessarily a GOOD thing, seeing as the number of autism cases has skyrocketed since the 1980's... now to the point 1 out of every 110 kids is diagnosed with autism. The number of people diagnosed with Aspergers alone is only about 1 or 2 in every 1,000, though (0.1% or 0.2%).

Ideas which may not work at all or may work a tiny little:

Act as if you're a NT?

Fake it until you make it?

Following - attempt at light humor:

Hire a PR/Public Relations firm to manage your image. A good PR firm can present you in ways the public will embrace and accept. This may assume you are financially quite well-off, however, that's how the dynamite maker Alfred Nobel turned his reputation around - with PR and money - money - money - lots of money from making dynamite. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Nobel

Browse the many masks available known as Venetian Carnival Masks. Find one, using polls, which appeals to the masses. Purchase it or rent it and present it as your new face to the public.

Not the number of cases--the number of diagnosed cases. There's an important difference: Autism diagnosis rates are going up, but actual autism rates are probably the same as they always were. Studies on populations of adults seem to show that the rate of autism in adults is about the same as it is in children. So we've always had autism around; we just didn't identify it as a separate phenomenon until recently.
