There is no such thing as one best med for everyone and anyone that suggests otherwise is a quack. Everyone, including people on the spectrum, are extremely different in what and how meds work for them.

IIRC, she was talking about a low dose of some tricyclic antidepressant. Not as a cure or even autism-specific, but that it helped her with anxiety.

There are no medications 'for autism'. Just medications that sometimes help people with certain things that go along with it. (Others of us, they just screw us up even worse.)

Yeah doctors have a bad habit of turning us into Ginny pigs. First they'll try something like an ADHD stimulant for example, only to find out a weak later it caused manic behavior so then they pull out the good old antipsychotics only to realize that they are too tranquilizing, and the next thing you know a few months later you're on 5 different medications and have acquired several more labels. Personally I don't recommend meds unless you really really need them. If you have a condition related to your autism then just get the right med for that but if your looking for a med for your autism I don't suggest it, because your really taking a chance.

The best medicine for autism, is acceptance.

Eric Hollander with Mount Sinai was studying a lose dose of prozac about 2 to 3 mlgrams helps to reduce some of the obsession and repetitive behaviors higher does just make those problems worse. There an experimental drug called oxytocin which reduces repetitive behaviors. It been implicated with social cognition and pair bonding. In human of normal adult males it been implicated in trust, empathy and defensive aggression of in group members. It Eric hollander team did two trial with oxytocin in human but seems to improve social cognition, social memory and decrease repetitive behaviors. If you want to learn more about Eric Hollander research check out this Youtube Video. A french and Australian team where able similar find to Eric team at mount Sinai but still work needs to done in real world situations and determine the long term affects of these drug. though the down side this drug is still experimental with autism so it unlike any doctor could prescribe because it would be consider of label. It could be another 10 years before we see it used to treat people with autism. The drug is currently going under evaluation for phase two drug trial with the FDA. There was as a company called Nastech a few years ago that was trying to get a patent to treat people with autism but they where really never heard from again I think they folded.

There is no medication deemed effective for treating Autism - period.

Corp900, don't make yourself a stooge for Big Pharma - why would you want to alter your neurochemistry with molecular compounds that do not exist in nature?

I'm very sorry for your sake that you seem so bent on 'curing' your own personality. You have a problem that runs much deeper than Autism and cannot be treated with drugs. Soaking your brain in chemicals will not change who you are, nor will it change the world around you.

Many people with autism also suffer from anxiety and depression. You can find some meds that are useful for those conditions and they might make you feel better, if you have anxiety or depression. You have to figure out with your doctor which ones will work for you and it will take some trial and error.

The only meds approved for autism are Abilify and Risperdal. They are anti-psychotics. I'm not sure what aspect of autism they are meant to help.

Autism is a developmental disorder, you don't just medicate it away.

Some medication helps with various symptoms - depression, anxiety, irritability, etc. There's nothing for autism itself. It's also a spectrum disorder, so everyone is impacted differently by their symptoms depending on where they are on the spectrum.

Abilify and Risperidone are used to treat irritability in autism, IIRC. My impression is that it's used for cases where someone has massive, violent meltdowns and may hurt themselves and/or others.

I have never done well on any kind of medicine. I have always had bad reactions to most medicine. The things that has helped me best has always been my service dog?

You can't medicate autism, only the comorbid conditions.

I take an SSRI and buspirone for anxiety.
Tenex for Tourette's.
Geodon for ASD related intolerance to frustration/melt downs/self injury.
Klonopin for panic attacks/melt downs.

i've heard good things about "Abilify", but i've never tried it.
Anyways, there are no meds specifically for AS or Autism as far as i know,
though Paxil helps me a bit with the anxiety.

This is why I don't trust psychiatrists, they want to make their money by forcing pills down out throat and turning us into their lab rats. There is no drug that can help autism. Autism is not a disease. Any mental issue such as anxiety and depression are from trying to exist in a world where people in general think you are worthless or stupid or a psychopath.

Shrinks don't seem to now -or care, which is more likely- about the differences than a temporary mental issue and one that requires medical attention. You can be saw for a few days and then bounce back. Tell a shrink you're blue, and they make you take drugs. Have trouble sleeping for a few days? Drugs. Angry because someone bullied you? Drugs. And then you end up experiencing awful side effects or reactions much worse that what your so-called illness.

A few years ago I had a shrink where his answer to everything was for me to check into the hospital. Soon I was afraid to say anything to him because the hospital is horrible and the last place I needed to be. They don't care about your problems anyway, they just make you come every three months or so to make sure you're taking your drugs and if you are you're back out in the hallway again. I hate them.
