Is it common AS trait to listen to one song or one musical artist over and over? My brother listens to Michael Jackson's "Rock with You" on replay forever and ever and we're pretty sure he has AS. A few years ago it was this one Japanese song, and he listened to that for years. I do this too with a song but it usually lasts a month or two at most. This month it was... ashamedly, Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. Do you listen to songs on repeat and not get bored of it for days/weeks/months, and what is "your" song of the moment (or lifetime lol)

You Really Got Me, by The Kinks is my theme song. I've found this out, after reading the first chapter of a self-help book, that I'm reading. A book that's about how your childhood memories define who you are. If I don't get to hear it, at least once a day, I can't sleep at night.

Childhood memories define who you are for aspies or everyone? :) My childhood memories seem to be more extensive than a lot of NTs I know...

I don't usually have just one song. I have several songs I listen to over and over for about a month. This month I've been listening to Halestorm's "I Get Off," "Innocence," "Familiar Taste of Poison," and "Nothing to Do with Love." I have also been listening to Aaliyah's "One in a Million," "4-Page Letter," and "Never Givin' Up." In addition I've been listenting to Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever," and The Cure's "Just Like Heaven."

I do listen to some songs repeatedly (I hadn't realised quite how much until threads like this one prompted me to keep an, uh, ear on it) but not fanatically. I do tend to sing songs and song fragments over and over if I'm by myself.

The name of "my song" is legion....for they are many

Just a few off the top of my head....Cream's "White Room".

The awe-inspiring majesty and power of that song is just inexpressible....both lyrically and musically.

To me....it's a song of transcendence, mystery, magic, beauty, adventure and the burning longing for self-deification that I believe exists in all of us.

"Yellow tigers...crouched in jungles....her dark eyes".

Those lyrics and their delivery have always sent chills down my spine.

Truly great music always does.

For sheer cathartic rage value.....Iron Maiden's "Killers" is a good one.

Oh....and for all the women who've initially been attracted to me and (because they think i'm "cute" or whatever) any who may ever be attracted to me again....the following Bob Dylan song says it all. Simply put....i'd prefer women didn't waste their time and mine with any initial attraction towards me. Said attraction is bound to fade ofcourse once they find out i'm an unemployed 40 y/o with Asperger's/NLD who lives with their parents. Beyond that....i'm not really interested in sex or relationships in the first place. The lack of both in my life has naught to do with why i'm so miserable.

"Go 'way from my window,
Leave at your own chosen speed.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I'm not the one you need.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong,
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong,
Someone to open each and every door,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go lightly from the ledge, babe,
Go lightly on the ground.
I'm not the one you want, babe,
I will only let you down.
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part,
Someone to close his eyes for you,
Someone to close his heart,
Someone who will die for you an' more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe.

Go melt back into the night, babe,
Everything inside is made of stone.
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone.
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall,
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call,
A lover for your life an' nothing more,
But it ain't me, babe,
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe,
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe".

For some time now I have been listening to Mississippi John Hurt's version of "Nearer My God To Thee" (okay... maybe that's a little odd for an atheist) Anyway, I think there is something in the syncopated rhythm of how he plays a guitar that calms me down and makes me happy.

On the other side of the emotional spectrum, I also too often listen to "A Song For..." by Townes Van Zandt - a really depressing song if you feel the need to not be happy. "All that I've done, and all that I've said/Means nothing to me, I'd soon as be dead/And all of this world be forgotten" and "I lie on my pillow and sleep if I must/It's too late to wish I'd been stronger."

And "Down There By The Train" by Tom Waits is a good one that gives a comforting take of forgiveness for one's crimes.

Right now it seems to be Five Finger Death Punch's "Bad Company". It seems to be my personal theme song anyway.

It takes a while for me to get sick of a song, but eventually I do stop listening to it over and over again. I think the longest time I've listened to a song every time I turned on my iPod was either "My Happy Ending" by Avril Lavigne or "Hell" by Disturbed. However, I can't say for sure because I've had Avril's song longer, listened to it on CD when I had a CD player and I've switched computers, so the play count isn't accurate for telling how many times I've actually listened to it.

I find that if I'm surrounded by people I tend to repeat the chorus of "Padshii Angel" (Fallen Angel - and wow does that look odd transliterated!) by Nautilus Pompilius (a Russian band) over and over again, or something similar. It's a soothing method, I guess.

I tend to think of music as the best way to express my emotions. When I hear a song that describes something I've felt, it usually becomes one of my favorites. I was able to show my mom what it feels like in my head to be surrounded by noisy people who are standing very close to me through a song (well, one part of it anyway).

If it's an Aspie trait to listen to songs over and over again, I don't know, I think it varies from person to person - like stims.

Neurologically, music is almost indistinguishable from narcotics. To me, listening to whatever song is my favorite of the week is most certainly addictive--more so than any NT I've discussed it with. But, like all ephemeral interests, my brain's anti-narcissism safety measure ensures that I soon enough become jaded with it.

None-the-less, in 15 years I've never been able to get the first verse of the Goo Goo Dolls' "Long Way Down" to wear on me:

Oh here you are, there's nothing left to say
You're not supposed to be that way
Did they push you out? did they throw you away?

Touch me now and I don't care
When you take me I'm not there
Almost human, but I'll never be the same

Yup! My song is Our God by Chris Tomlin. I listen to it a lot now, but I also have cycled through a lot of songs. I also have certain songs / artists that I associate with an event & when I'm reminded of that particular event, I listen to them. For example, I listen to a certain Shane & Shane CD when I think of stuff related to ASD since I listened to that CD to comfort me during the dx process. Songs by the OC Supertones make me think of my thesis since I listened to them a lot when I was working on that :)

Everyone I know, AS or otherwise, listens to songs over and over. I don't think it's an exclusively AS trait.
