Can you tell if someone has autism/aspergers

I can smell them from a mile away................

Sometimes.
With more severe autism, it can be very obvious, though there are some things that look like autism but are actually cerebral palsy or something like that.
Then moderate autism, a difference is, 99% of the time, obvious, but it may just be MR, or something else. I know a very outgoing, moderately autistic adolescent boy who has moderate mental retardation. He is social and greets people, but I heard that when he was a baby the doctors told his parents that he'd never speak.
Asperger's... I can speculate that someone may have it or some characteristics of it, yet I cannot immediately come to the conclusion, "_____ most definitely has Asperger's Syndrome! I should ask him/her about it."

I seem to have grown an Aspie radar, over the years.

I've known someone for several years and I heard his wife had aspergers.

She passed away before I knew him, and I also thought he might be on the spectrum too.

I finally sat down with him, as curiousity was getting to me, and I don't remember how I adroitly shifted the conversation to autism, but some how it went into a smooth transition,(usually anything I try as this ends up rough) and we talked for about 15 minutes about it and indeed he said that he is on the spectrum.

First one I met.

I have an aspie radar too. Occasionally there is one that gets by me (the other day someone told me they were AS and I had no idea) though.

No I don't think I can really tell at all........I tend to wonder about anyone who is socially awkward in a similar way as I amlol.

how can you tell can you tell from a photo or video?

I can smell them 10 miles away .. . lol. the problem is, how do I tell them if they don't know?

I'm not really sure whether I can or not. I usually only wonder if a person has Asperger's if I find myself able to relate to them (without having to make an intellectual effort to do so, that is). And then I never find out because I don't know how to do so subtly.

I can taste them 20 miles away.

I do not see how we could tell that someone we do not know is Aspie or not, I don't even think it's so easy with people we know because of the many conditions they could have or the fact that they could just lie (my best friend hate when I explain to her why I suffered from my dyspraxia in the past and think I am faking it, therefore she says : "me too", sometimes contradict herself, etc).

seriously how can you be so sure you can spot auties/aspies.

i for one am never sure wether or not someone has it, i always dispatch it as projecting my own quircks onto others.

please explain how and what you do to recognize others.

I have only met one person who I know is diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, and he lives in another city. But I would say that the people around me are predominantly not normal - technogeeks, eccentrics, academics and people with psychiatric conditions - and there are a few who have many traits like mine, but equally these traits are common in my unusual neighbourhood.

Being an Aspie I have a hard time "reading" other people so I cannot reliably say whether another person is an Aspie or not based on casual observation and interaction.
