Hello WP, Rob here,

The day I went to the doctor and was diagnosed (not confirmed at that point) I went there to get advice on how to break free from being enabled by my mother first and then my wife..

I never expected the doc to hand give me the biggest crutch and excuse to fail. (I mean no offense to anyone) The more I found out about AS, the more everything fit me. At the same time I was amazed I am as functional as I am, and how much I have overcome on my own.

After a confused storm of mixed emotions, I have reached balance again.

Some of you may recall a post where I asked advice to help clean.. I mentioned how it would be great if we could change our obsession focus at will. I did some research and found many people ask how to change their focus. The responses that I saw all said that was impossible..

That was all I needed.... while I'm not obsessed with cleaning yet, I am extremely focused... if I can totally change to the burning every waking moment obsesssion, I promise to tell you all how it can be done..

I will scan the posts once in a while.. but for now I have a lot to accomplish with no need of a crutch...

Good luck and farewell!

Rob
(UPDATE):
I was thinking that one of our common AS traits, while perceived by many NTs as a liability could in fact become a tremendous asset or gift. Of course if you read the above you know I'm talking about our obsessions.

I set about to experiment in my mind to change my passion focus and even obsession to something that was previously an extremely unpleasant source of anxiety for me... the huge mess this house is in..

Here are some preliminary results:

1). I was unable to "change" obsessions, rather I added a new fixation. This had the effect of not only allowing me to clean, but also feel compelled to continue. I even started and have now nearly completed the kitchen. Due to the previous neglect, a new ecosystem had developed in there which prevented me from even entering. (I will spare you the details, but the smell was indescribable and only the beginning)

2). I firmly believe that anyone here can do the same. In the short time I have been here, I have noticed that one of the many things most of us have in common is a high intelligence and a logical self awareness. I also believe most of us are visual thinkers.(these are of course my opinions, admittedly based on a limited amount of time in research here.)

3). It helps if you are narcissistic and egotisical. If someone tells you something is impossible, you feel compelled to prove them wrong, then you are already on the right course..

I thought I'd drop in for a moment while taking a quick break. (posting this with my cell phone lol) I feel so empowered and I want to detail exactly my chain of reasoning of how I got here, but I need to keep moving or I'll stiffen up (I have been totally inactive for 4 years) and I'm really exited about finishing the kitchen and beginning the large "family" room which is currently crammed to the rafters with junk. I will make a seperate post tonight outlining how I got here!

Take care!

Rob :)

Rob, you're welcome to drop by anytime, and we'd like to hear what you have to say either as a fellow 'Aspie' or a 'bridge person.'

And looking at Gates, Spielberg, Richard Feynman, Carl Sagan (potentials, none confirm), I don't look at Asperg'er's as an excuse to fail, far from it. Just that we learn in a different way, and as a reason to keep trying.

Hey WP, Rob here,
I am really excited and I wanted to share my progress. I updated my original post but it didn't bump. You all have helped me so much and I am excited to be able to give something back. So this is maybe not a shameless bump after all.. as I said above, I will outline the exact thought process I used to get here so maybe some or all of you can feel as good as I do right now!
While I am working, I am organizing my words for the post. Forgive me, I am a visual thinker and finding the correct wording sometimes takes a little time.

Thanks,
Rob

It's great to hear/read you're doing so well with the cleaning/organizing of your home, Rob. I wish you could come over to my apt/home after you're done there, to help me pack my things up so I can move. ;)

Exactly.

If you try to explain Asperger's to someone and explain that you THINK you MIGHT have it, people automatically assume you're looking for an excuse for your failures in life and your shortcomings. What I'm looking for (in whatEVer this is that I have) is a way to understand myself better and succeed despite the limitations I have.
