For the past few months my mom has been thinking I have aspergers because I don't really hang out with people a lot and did some weird things when I was younger. I really don't think I don't though, so I'm hoping that maybe I can get like a rough idea here. its prolly a good idea to tell you about myself first, so yea. Well first off I am pretty shy around new people, but after I while its not a problem. I also am a pretty funny person and can make pretty much anybody laugh, I am pretty good at understanding what people are thinking without them saying it and I can read body language natrually. My favorite think too do is snowboard and even though I am very passionate about it, it isnt all that I talk about, and in all honesty, I actually rarely talk about it. The reason my mom thinks I have it is mostly because when I was younger I had a few things that could be associated aspergers, but honestly I pretty much grew out of them or got over it, and I have a pretty good explanation for all them. One of the things my mom says is that when I was younger, I used to hate wearing jeans, but the reason is because, there uncomfortable and they would always fall down because my mom didn't give me a belt. Its mostly bunch a little stuff that can be simply explained like that, and even so I stopped doing most of them without any trouble. The thing is though, when I read most of the posts here or talk to people with aspergers, I feel like there different, but I don't feel that way with normal people. So judging by what you read, do you think I have it?

(haha sorry about writing that much, but if you can read the whole thing, it would be really helpful)

Ironically, that information is not enough to make a diagnosis, and none of us over the internet are qualified too either.

Based on what you said, I think you are just shy with some extra characteristic personality traits. IF you outgrew all of the negatives, you could just be gifted as well.

I'd like someone to explain what this actually means when people say this? I don't think I even thought a whole lot about what was in people's minds in general unless I thought they might be pissed off at me.

I think this falls under empathy, I'm not sure. Very confusing subject for me.

Just in general you have an idea of what people are thinking?

Understanding what people are thinking is sort of like when a person is upset or mad or something, but they just say they arn't, even though you can tell that they are mad about something, idk, its hard to describe, but I think I got the point across.

oh, ok, I think I can do that with someone is angry and deny. But I can misinterpret as well. It can just sound like a magical talent when I hear that.
That was the main thing that stood out to me in your post. I'm new to all this.

I didn't do very well articulating what I was meaning. I mostly don't "get" other people very well and it sounded like thats you were saying you did.

Not hanging out with people sounds like you're alright by me :-)
To me you sound fairly well wired, but like coldkick said you may need to get an official, particularly if your ma thinks you may have issue. Self perception is tricky and self image is a killer for autistics; and if you're atypical or have comorbidity then it can mask a lot of traits eg I'm extremely extroverted which tends to override typical Asperger social anxiety stuff.
It'll take someone familiar with you and qualified to diagnose you; you did the right thing by asking but it might be better to ask people who know you a bit better.

Hmm, I don't think you do and I think it will be hard for you to get a diagnosis.

Usually to get diagnosed they ask you about your interests and see how intense they are. Every person I meet will soon find out what my interests are. I'm trying really hard not to tell you now. They are all I talk and think about. Second is the whole social skills thing. Can you small talk? You know, just talk about stuff of little importance that has an ever changing subject of even more unimportant things? Sorry, I have problems with small talk. I can't do it. I only can talk about something that interests me.
How are you dealing with change? I get a really unsettling feeling. Also I talk about myself a lot which looks like selfishness but it's the only way I know how to relate.
Also, stopping a behaviour would be hard to do if you had Asperger's. And we don't just pick up skills. We have to know how to do something step by step.

You're probably just introverted.

And if your mother still hassles you about it tell her to buy you a belt.

I think the person that is most likely to know is you. Your apology for the level of detail in the opening post is not very aspergeresque ;)

Some people with AS who have been criticized heavily can tend to become overly apologetic, as a default position. They constantly apologize for themselves because they don't always know when they are doing something irritating or not, but fear they always are, because of years of negative feedback.

We're all different.

I'm not implying the OP has AS, BTW. It doesn't sound like it to me.
