Seeing as how metal has been my favorite type of music for years I thought it couldn't hurt to start a topic to see who everyone's favorite metal bands are. :D

I seem to listen to black metal more than anything these days but enjoy almost anything (black/thrash/death/heavy/doom/grind etc.) although I really don't like very much of the modern -core or mallcore bands that seem to be what's popular these days (although feel free to post about those too if you'd like). Favorite bands that come to mind at the moment are probably Emperor, Drudkh, Melvins, Nokturnal Mortum, Graveland, Astrofaes, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Sarcofago, Skepticism, Dissection, Unholy, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Nunslaughter, Empyrium, Death, Atheist and many many more.

Be it Judas Priest or Children of Bodom or Dream Theater feel free to post away. 8)

I don't actually pay much attention to music. But some of the bands that I have liked would be
Slayer - Pantera - White/Rob Zombie - Some Metallica - Some Nine Inch Nails - Ozzy Osbourne

And there's a bunch of stuff I've listened to on http://www.snakenet.com. They run a bit of a range of good (possibly hilarious) and hilarious(bad) there.

In all honesty, I've found that most of these bands aren't angry enough for my taste. And the ones that sound like they're almost (I don't think any band is angry enough for my taste. Stuff catches on fire around me when I'm in a good mood) sufficently upset are generally absolutely horrible.

Bah. I need to learn to play an instrument and get a band together. Then people would be all like "Woah. That Xuincherguixe guy is angry!" "And crazy!"

(Seriously, one of my ideas is to write Buddhist Heavy metal. How is that anything BUT crazy?)

Well I listen to a pretty large range of metal, anything from beautiful stuff that makes you want to take a nice walk through and autumn forest to albums that promote genocide of the human race.

I don't really know what you mean by "angry" but some very brutal/violent sounding stuff (albums that come to mind) might be:
Bestial Warlust - Vengeance War Til Death
Revenge - Triumph.Genocide.Antichrist.
Revenge - Victory.Intolerance.Mastery.
Watchmaker - Kill f*****g Everyone
Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro

Anyways those are albums that try just for sheer brutality/violence for sure...

I play bass and I'm currently learning how to play the outro to Metallica's "The Unforgiven" and I'm also working on my own songs.
I also love Arch Enemy, Testament, Motörhead and other Thrash Metal bands. I listen to a lot of bands but I prefer those with real Melodies.

LOL that would be insane. I don't even think that's possible.

I don't see why not, in the end metal is just a genre of music and there's already bands out there that have themes of paganism, christianity, judaism and satanism...

As PathoftheImmortals said, metal is a genre of music. Just like any other form of music, it can be used to express any philosophy or religion that the musician choses. The idea that metal is always Satanic is just Christian propaganda and not reality.

I listen to and collect lots of metal and underground CDs. I don't only listen to metal, since I also listen to a lot of abrasive industrial music. Basically, I listen to a lot of dark music, though it does not have to be angry, but dark and eerie-sounding. I also listen to a lot of hardcore and punk, with a strong emphasis on grindcore like Assuck or Extreme Noise Terror. Maybe a few slower punk bands, but most pop-punk is out of my tastes. I'm also into ambient and experimental, such as much of Peter Missing's work, David Tibet, Steven Stapleton, etc...

In terms of metal, though, bands that I have heard, those that are unknown and worth checking out might be:

Neolithic
Dark Heresy
Inner Thought
Tenebris
Shub-Niggurath
Mental Home
Cruachan
Fleurety
Sadist
Caducity

Some metal bands I like are.
Dream Theater
Iced Earth
Evergray
Opeth
In Flames
Shadows Fall
Tool

Although they are not really considered metal I really like Coheed and Cambria.

Nice post, Extreme Noise Terror are f*****g insane. Have been meaning to check out Assuck for a while actually but just haven't gotten around to it for some reason :?
I'm into bits of lots of other types of music as well, anything from neo-folk to grunge to ambient to the occasional song you hear on Mtv.

Fleurety must have the most messed up vocals I've ever heard...

@Blueice: What did you think of the new Tool album??

I'm not sure what fits into the Metal genre in the list but hey... stuff like:
Opeth
Slayer
Satyricon
Tool
Black Sabbath
Cradle Of Filth
Iced Earth
Shadows Fall
Metallica
Mastodon
Megadeth
Nine Inch Nails
Pantera
System Of A Down
Marilyn Manson
...though I'm not sure if all of those are *Metal* exactly, and I know I've missed tonnes out.. pretty generic list *goes and listens to other peoples suggestions*

Assuck was the best grindcore band around at one point. They're not active anymore. They had two albums on Sound Pollution records, though their best, I think, was the split 7" with OLD. A lot of their 7" material is extremely hard to find nowadays. Maybe a discography has been released. I don't know. Like, Charles Bronson (yes ... a band) has released a discography, and so has many other bands in this genre.

I don't care for grunge that much, though I like Alice in Chains and a few Nirvana songs. I used to listen to some Mudhoney, and I like Rob Zombie (if you'd call that grunge). I tend to not listen to much major label material.

Neo-folk? Like Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio? Like, that's the best band that has been called neo-folk. Current 93 is good, as is Death In June. Like, anything from David Tibet, including his really-hard-to-find early stuff, before his apocalyptic folk sound.

The first avatar I put up was a picture of the latest album by Electric Wizard a Sludge Metal/Doom Metal/Stoner Rock band and now i've got up the cover for Danzigs "How the Gods Kill" even though his earlier stuff isn't metal later stuff is. I also like...

Rob Zombie
Paradise Lost
Moi Dix Mois (Neo-Classical Metal)
Theatre of Tragedy
The Kovenant (And pre The Kovenant)
Killing Joke
Deathstars (Might be more Industrial)
Rammstein
T3CHN0PH0B1A (Again might not be metal)
Theatres Des Vampires
Hanzel und Gretyl
The Eternal
Nosferatu (Probably more Hard Rock, eh)
Ministry
Darkseed
And "A.C."

and a ton of other bands that fit into various catagories from Gothic Rock to JRock (Japanese Rock) to Punk and things even more distorted and off beat.

Some fave neo-folk artists of mine are Sol Invictus, Death In June, Der Blutharsch, Blood Axis, Empyrium (early stuff had a few bm elements as well but still leaned a lot more to neo-folk in the vein of Ulver's "Kveldssanger), Current 93, Vilkduja, Novy Svet etc. Have lots of Current 93 releases but am yet to hear their pre-apocalyptic folk material unfortunately. I'm also into a ton of heathen/pagan bands who mix folk elements with bm (Temnozor, Nokturnal Mortum, Falkenbach, Lumsk, Storm, Agalloch etc etc.)
Btw which distros do you find most reliable for neo-folk/ambient etc ??
