I suppose I should stop creeping and start posting...
I've been reading the forums for a while...finally got the nerve to register and introduce myself.
I'm Kayla. Last year I talked to a psychologist at my school about my academic/social difficulties. She diagnosed me with ADHD and referred me to a psychologist for treatment. I think the medication is helping me technically, but the diagnosis of ADHD doesn't seem to offer explanations for my other issues. I've always been/been told that I'm socially awkward. I long for social interaction but dread actually partaking in it (Especially physical social interaction...I always feel like I want to hug friends, but most of the time I can't stand being touched); I get frustrated extremely easily; since coming to college I've rediscovered how horrible I am at making friends (I have a few very close friends back home, but I'm still in awe of their ability to tolerate me). I did a lot of research online and began to think I might have Asperger's. I went back to the psychologist with this thought and she referred me to another doctor who she said had more experience with ASD. After meeting with this doctor for an hour, she told me she didn't really like to diagnose Asperger's because they are taking it out of the DSM. This sounded a bit like BS.
From day to day, my opinion shifts from me wholeheartedly believing I have Asperger's to thinking I'm stupid to doubt the opinions of professionals and maybe I just want attention. I'm currently in the former mood and have been seeking out alternate ways to get a diagnosis (or lack thereof). I've been having a difficult time though because I really don't want to talk to my mom about this (talking to her about the ADHD thing was the most awkward thing ever)...I don't even know if she'd believe it. Apparently California has resource centers where I may be able to get an evaluation, but I'm kind of confused about them...if anyone here is from California I'd love some advice!
Anyway, now that I've rambled for two paragraphs, quite probably alienating all thread-viewers, I'll tell you some less depressing things about myself! I'm a sophomore in college. I love photography--concert photography in particular. I also love politics, though this interest spawns out of my larger need to argue incessantly. I watch too much TV for my own good; some (realllllly stressing the incompleteness of this list...) of my current favorite shows include: 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Dexter, and the Rachel Maddow show. Some of my favorite music includes: Andrew Bird, Cat Stevens, LCD Soundsystem, The Decemberists, and the Bach Cello Suites (hence my username). My other, more quirky interests include: the City of Chicago and its history, the late Senator Ted Kennedy, meteor showers, and typography.
I apologize if this introduction is as awkward as I am told my real life introductions are...it feels refreshing already to be among other "weirdos!"
Hello and welcome to WrongPlanet BWV1007
Glad you found the courage to start posting. No your introduction is not awkward, and thanks for sharing with us.
You are lucky your doctor was honest and humble enough to admit she didn't have experience with ASD. Sorry about the 2nd doctor's decision about a diagnosis tho. I don't know why they are doing this (taking out of DSM).
See you around
Shadi
