Given that there are a variety of financial, economic, environmental, and geopolitical issues that require attention, how dangerous is it that a large subset of the most militarily powerful nation on Earth is longing for the end of the world? Are these people just intellectual hypocrites, self-delusional and cognitively dissonant, spouting out how the world will end in 2012 or 2011 or whatever but saving up for forty years in the future, or is there something worse at play here? Are the Rapture Mongers people who are actually acting consistently according to their beliefs, thereby producing a culture of fatalistic indifference to the important, secular matters society has to address? That is to say will they ignore important problems due to their monotrophic focus on the alleged end of the world in a few years?

Just like as*holes who talk down on public education: they make it fail themselves.

AronRa said his neighbours are rapturists and havent painted their house nor maintained their yard in 20+ years. What hell would we live in if such a view point were applied to the social infrastructure? Five years of zero maintenance shreds asphalt around here.

It's called having the republicans in charge and we pretty much haven't had infrastructure maintained for the most part. It's quite dangerous and will screw us just like it did the Russians. The Russians invested all their focus and efforts in foreign wars and completely abandoned maintaining their own infrastructure. The same is now happening here.

Perhaps this explains why bridges collapse in America. I am (half) joking here, but the indifference to long-term planning many of the more consistent rapturists ascribe to may be genuinely harmful.

They are harmless idiots who adjust their predictions every time their prophecy detonates in their face.

Maybe it is silly, but I monger raptors. In fact, I have mongered every single raptor I have come across. Frankly, I think I am useful though, because when the end comes, nothing will stop the onslaught of the raptors. Nothing. I warn people of this, so that way they know to live their last days as best they can.

I think the biggest reason for the lack of long-term planning has more to do with the fact we're bankrupt. What we have now is completely unsustainable. It's easier to "cut" that future spending(or to at least put on the back burner until it's a crisis situatuib) than it is to cut real spending in the present that hurts now. If we're not insolvent now, we will be very soon.

Also, public school sucks for a lot of reasons ska.

As long as they aren't actively trying to provoke the end times, final judgement, rapture, armageddon, etc, then I really couldn't care less about such people.

If they don't give a s**t about the rest of humanity in lieu of some supposed nirvana, they perhaps they would be better off on a deserted island and wait it out.

What do you mean the failure of infrastructure is the fault of Republicans. As if Democrats are any good at it. Or being a leftist means one cares about infrastructure.what about all the Democrat-run urban centers that are disintegrating? Is that also everyone else in the country should fix up Democrat cities because they won't do it themselves? This is a Federal system. The local and state governments are supposed to fix their own problems, with as little federal intervention as possible. Federal money may at times be needed, but the poor state of local infrastructure is the local government's responsibility. Or do Democrat-run cities need Uncle Sugar to hold their little hands all day?
Now, the same goes for poorly maintained Republican-run local governments. The poor state of the nation's infrastructure is the fault of corrupt local governments, whether Democrat or Republican. It has nothing to do with Rapture Mongers.
Now, as far as Rapture Mongering. The so-called conservatives don't really believe in the Rapture. They pretend to be fundamentalist Christians to get that group's votes. No one believes in the Rapture unless they're brainwashed by some fundamentalist group. The rapture is plain silly, just a device for preachers to raise cash. Not all fundamentalist Christians even believe in the Rapture.

Rapturists try their hardest to cause a war. Some are trying to engineer a red heifer with genetics. This they hope will trigger a war as this red heifer will "force" Israel to blow up the third holiest site in Islam. This is why they're dangerous and they're doing it hoping to cheat death through the perverted death of others.

Democratic-run jurisdictions in question have lost much of their tax base. They can't create their own money unlike the Fed and the banks. Blockbusting and redlining had a lot to do with it, not to mention one of the first of the neocon hits, "planned shrinkage".

I never knew that roads and bridges were the responsibility of cities.

Actually a lot of Rapturists believe that the end to the Arab-Israeli conflict will coincide with the rise of the Antichrist. Therefore those who work towards peace are actually doing the work of the devil. Once world peace is finally established all the Christians will be taken up and Jesus will ride down out of heaven and slaughter the heathens.

Well, it's not exactly the most current news story, but there was the I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapse in Minneapolis three and a half years ago. 13 people were killed. That's a pretty good example of the sort of destruction to which our current trend of neglecting the infrastructure leads.
