I've read different posts here ranging from IQ,you have a college degree to you don't behave like X family member who has Autism. Can any of you think of any more? I am doing a Social Problems class and I think a problem with society is there view on autism such as we have Savant abilities or are all good at numbers/math ( see Rainman) or the Autism Speaks video that makes it sound like Autism is some Demon possesion. LOL! Can anyone think of any more ideas? Thanks.

Oh, I thought this was going to be a game. Can't have autism because....the laundry isn't folded.
But I see what you're getting at. Maybe an ever changing array of special interests? That made me question my dx a bit. I don't know if society has a problem with it, though.

You don't have a monotone voice.

You dress trendy.

You have an open mind.

You make eye contact.

You make jokes, laugh at jokes.

What I've been told:

"You can't be autistic because you express empathy." (hey, I have a lot of practice! It's almost automatic in most situations, and it's sincere, if scripted)

"You don't sound aloof enough." (this is online, where it's easier to present yourself as you wish)

"You have theory of mind."

"You, a 41-year old adult, are different from a 10-year old autistic child I once saw in a classroom."

Strangely, one guy who seemed to have mostly negative attitudes about autism (he communicated what he was trying to say badly, I think, as he hasn't done it again), just asked me one question: "Do you need to move your hands a lot?" and when I answered "Yes", he said "Okay, maybe you are." And has been cool about it ever since.

True. Sorry I'm still trying to make since of what this course curriculum is. I've asked the teacher to call me so we can discuss the course a little more indepth. I'll see what he says.

You articulate very well.

You like to talk.

You look like someone famous. That person is on the spectrum...Hello!

You have a sense of humour.

You give good eye contact.

You sound like your British ancestors, instead of Rain Man. Don't some aspies speak with an accent?....Hello!

You don't wear diapers. What makes you so sure? I do and when I have an accident, I say that I farted and vanish to the washroom. I don't sit around in it like a more disabled person would.

You have a special interest....Hello! It's called autism.

You're so attractive! So is my autistic role model.

You can't be autistic or have asperger's because you can form coherent sentences - aka 'you're too smart'

the two our family has heard:

he is too young to have asperger's. (from both the school psychologist and school social worker about a 4 yr old; they were right, his correct diagnosis is classic autism!)

he talks, in what way is he autistic? (from our sons DOCTOR. who obviously knows nothing about autism.)

Oh my goodness. That reminds me of something that is offensive to me that I hear: "But you're not ret*d!" Hmm, gee, no I'm not.
I know it's out of ignorance, but it's still annoying. Especially since intelligence is an often misunderstood thing for those on the spectrum.

I think people put a lot of weight on appearance. I wonder what they'd be expecting, though?

Psychologist told me that.

Would it be less offensive to hear "you are ret*d"? ;D

You can hold a reciprocal conversation.

You don't have any anxiety about approaching strangers. (IMO, this can be a very autistic thing!)

Your interests don't seem to be that narrow. (They always have been, but I've forced myself to push my boundaries thanks to mainstream schooling.)

You don't go into long one-sided monologues about your interests. (I can't - people always end up interrupting me when I take pauses to think about what to say next, and then I get distracted.)
