Any ways to slow down?
I think too much and I'm pretty forgetful because of it. I would like to slow down as to retain, but I'm really not sure what to do. I'm pretty annoyed at the moment because my friend called me a jackass simply because I forgot things to remind her or forgot to tell her something even though she knows damn well if I'm told something and it's not drilled into me, I'm likely to forget it as I go off and do something else.
I can relate to your sense that you think too much and wanting to slow down to increase your ability to be effective and present in your life....I went through many years of frustration with this, as therapists pointed out to me many times that I was "too much in my head," etc. and I could see their point...
In the years since then, these are some things I've found that have helped very much....
1. meditating, esp to meditation tapes -- of course, it's hard to sit still, but many times like in the morning when I wake up, or in the middle of the day when I want a nap, I can listen to a meditation tape and it REALLY calms me down. (I can even listen to them when I'm walking around if I want; they still calm me down.).....There are a million of them, you could search on Amazon or at your local library site....Two creators I like are Thich Nhat Hanh and Marc Allen.
2. TAT -- an energy tool for healing trauma and stress which involves pressing on accupressure points on your head. It is free to teach yourself this -- I can't post URLs yet because I just joined, but you can Google, Tapas Accupressure Technique if you are interested....
3. EFT -- another energy tool for changing emotional patterns with accupressure, also free to learn and use yourself. Google Emotional Freedom Technique
4. I make a list of everything I can think of that calms me down -- these kinds of lists are very personal and yours will be also -- some of mine are, light a candle, journal, sit under my SAD light, read a daily meditation book, take myself to the movies, go for a walk, talk to a friend on the phone.....Then when I am having a "hyper" or distressed day, I just commit to doing 3 or 5 of these that day -- and my day gets better.
Hope that helps.
