It seems like everyone else on here was diagnosed as an adult or teenager. Is there anyone else who was diagnosed as a child? If so, how young? I was diagnosed with AS at 5. First diagnosis. No re-diagnosis.

Six years old I was thought to have ADD. At eight or nine I was rediagnosed as AS.

Course not. I just saw a TV programme about family of six autistic kids of which two were diagnosed under ten with AS.

I was 12 when diagnosed with AS. When I was 2, doctors thought I had autism and my parents rejected the label.

I was also diagnosed with ADD at age ten and they thought it was the main problem I had.

I was diagnosed at 11 but my parents never told me. I only found out at 16 when a doctor in a hospital told me thinking I knew already

I was in my early teens. I've always considered that childhood (just because it's the second half of childhood doesn't make you not a child).

Asperger's didn't exist as a diagnosis in the US when I was a child. ADHD did, but in my case it was never caught.

I don't know if I would have qualified for any other criteria at the time. Looking at the DSM-III criteria, maybe, but there was no way my mother's ex was letting me see a psychiatrist on account of not wanting to get in trouble for his abuse. Plus, I was 11 when the DSM-III came out.

I was diagnosed at 5, too, with borderline autism.

I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS when I was a year old as I had severe motor delays. When I was four, my preschool teacher suggested that I might have Autism as I was not relating to the world around me but the child psychiatrist they appointed ruled that out as I had no speech delays. Instead I was diagnosed with severe ADHD which I don't think I have because I can focus intently on something when I am very interested. When I was in fourth grade, a school psychologist suggested that I had AS. My parents wouldn't accept this diagnosis, as they believed there was stigma to it for some reason (the other diagnoses I received were much more harmful than AS. They would have preferred to label me NLD, which would have been more harmful because the nature of my problems are mainly social not academic. I was diagnosed with AS when I was seventeen.
