I have found that copper makes autistic symptoms worse but zinc makes them better

has anyone else found this and has anyone found any scientific basis for this finding, I bought some neurozan tablets from a pharmacy, they contain 15mg of zinc as well as 1mg of copper. They also contain a lot of other things such as glutathione and other things I wanted to try but can't as I have given them away.

I know that copper and zinc are mutually antagonistic, one blocks the absorption of the other in the body and with the combination the negative effects of the copper predominate.

thanks

the other thing to do to treat autism would be to have a blood test called a vitamin assay in the UK, so that would involve testing the levels of both vitamin B12 and folic acid. If these were at the lower end of the range or you were deficient then supplementation may be beneficial. This would involve taking prescribed medicine from your doctor if you were deficient or buying tablets or sublingual vitamin B12 liquid [eg holland and barrett]

so basically take zinc, no copper and folic acid and vitamin B12 if you are deficient or your levels are at the lower end of the range - so for me this would involve taking zinc and folic acid which I need to go buy cheaply

I've been taking zink in the past but I never experienced that it help with my autism. But sulphur has helped me with my fatigue and difficulties to concentrate.

No. I take a women's daily vitamin/mineral thingie but that's for reasons totally unrelated to autism and doesn't affect anything autism-related. (Except indirectly the way any physical condition can affect cognition, but even then... not really like that.)

I answered no, although Cu and Zn are found in my multivitamins, so technically yes. I have never read about any clinical significance before. Anytime anyone mentions copper I always point out that it is strange that it was called cuprum (hence the Cu on the periodic table). I guess cuprum wasn't good enough.

I've been taking zinc for unrelated reasons (never heard of it allegedly helping with problems related to autism) for 2-3 months. I haven't noticed any impact on my "autistic symptoms."

What about AU for gold, or PB for lead!?!?!? Of course different cultures at different times discovered things and named them accordingly. You know, we once had TEN months. It was a lunar calendar. They started replacing the months with names of gods, etc... The two extra months were named after rulers. And the REST?

GO FIGURE!

BTW you DO want to get some copper. Males BURN THROUGH zinc! Taking zinc CAN give you more hormones. And that CAN increase confidence, muscle tone, etc... MAYBE even MEMORY! Is THAT what you are talking about? BTW it is most noticable if you are deficient. And it may not affect females at all!

I like the oddities, words with spelling or alter egos that show up their history from other languages.
Lead = Pb from plumbum, hence plumbline = weight on a string used to find a true vertical
Other Latin names:
Gold (Au) Aurum,
Silver (Ag) is named for Argentum
Iron (Fe) is named for Ferrum
Sodium (Na) is named for Natrum
Tungsten (W) is named for Wolfram

Back to the thread, I take a pure zinc supplement if I start to get a cold, research study recently shown this does help reduce symptoms (also helps reduce cold sore frequency). I don't take it otherwise because it makes me feel nauseous.

It does. If you take it with food (I recommend rice or bread) it cuts down on the nausea dramatically.

WOW, maybe it's because I'm male, but I can take over 50mg of zinc as zinc glucconate, and NOT feel bad, even on an empty stomach. And the tablets I take dissolve VERY well. I can't keep it in my mouth more than a few seconds before it starts dissolving. But the zinc only supplements are really for men or people with SEVERE deficiencies.

I don't know why you think you should only take zinc if you are male or have severe deficiencies and I also didn't know about the effect on hormones - please could you mention where you read that or the mechanism

If you are taking a product you bought with copper as well as zinc or copper on its own then I would stop taking that if you have autism because I believe it may make any autistic symptoms worse. I have felt that strongly myself

I also take inositol, it keeps me calm and helps me think more clearly

I used to know a lot of the latin names for the elements, and BTW Na stands for Natrium [you missed out the I]
Wolfram for Tungsten is a new one on me,
