http://www.grist.org/article/2011-03-11 ... looks-like

And the really funny thing is Rush Limbaugh predicted the left would claim global warming caused the earthquake.

How are University College of London and The China Meteorological Administration, where this information comes from, the Looney Left?

I have no respect for the University College of London atm. ever since climategate, and the China Meterological Administration is not made up of geologists.

Furthermore: correlation does not equal causation.

Example:

There is more crime in warm weather.

More ice cream is sold when there is more crime.

Therefore ice cream causes an increase in crime.

What are the arguments supporting the possibility that global warming can cause earthquakes?

Personally, I don't see how plate tectonics would be affected by global warming, but I'm no expert.

You misunderstand the basic premise.

Quote:
Melting ice masses change the pressures on the underlying earth

True. Look at Antarctica. The entire landmass is sunken below sea level with a few exceptions, because of the weight of it's massive ice sheet. If said ice sheet were to melt, the land would begin to rise, and we would see Earthquakes and perhaps even vulcanism as tectonic stress is induced on the Antarctic plate

Quote:
Rising seas also change the balance of mass across earth's surface, putting new strain on old earthquake faults

This is also true. In fact Humans can cause Earthquakes, there was a major Earthquake in China and partly it was caused by the immense weight of a new hydroelectric dam on the fault zone. However, the second half of this sentence:

Quote:
and may have been partly to blame for the devastating 2004 tsunami that struck Southeast Asia

Is conjecture at this point

Go read about tectonics, and climate, please. Rush Limbaugh is an idiot

The earthquakes in New Zealand, Arkansas* (increasing in number and intensity daily) and now Japan are just precursors to the impending massive Earth Crust Displacement which, like the Mastodons and Sabertooth Tigers flash frozen in Siberia and Alaska with undigested food in their mouths, will kill most of the species on the planet and erase human civilization from the face of the Earth. Fallout from the rubble of all the nuclear power plants will do the rest, reducing Terra to just another lifeless rock. The calendar inherited by the Maya from the previous technological civilization says the party's over at winter solstice of 2012. Sleep tight.

I see you subscribe to the 'Roland Emmerich' hypothesis... well, I hope you have a big budget for all the special effects required :D

New Zealand and Japan are in the Ring of Fire which is well known for being geologically active.

I wonder if this current string of quakes are sympathetic. Since it is basically one tectonic system it isn't that far fetched. Blaming it on 'global warming' is just jumping the gun though.

Congratulations, we have a winner. It took less than 10 posts for someone to post a comment including, Redneck, religion and the Right. Thanks, I won a $5 bet.

Let's leave aside the question of whether global warming is anthrogenic or not.

It is observable that polar ice cover is diminished, and that arctic and antarctic ice sheets are in recession. This means that water is being redistributed on the surface of the planet.

Now, spreading the net reduction in polar ice cover across 60-odd% of the earth's surface might have a negligible impact. Is this redistribution of mass sufficient to cause tectonic movement? Even if it is not sufficient to cause tectonic movement itself, is it sufficient to make tectonic movement worse?

Does the redistribution of mass also serve to reduce the temperature of the oceans? If so, by how much, and what impact does that have on the weight exerted upon the underlying plates, and on the movement of kinetic energy through the medium?

I don't have enough of a background to know these answers, but I do see that there could be a potential causal link.

There were worse quakes long before Global Warming, or talk radio.

The ice has been melting for 13,000 years, it has not torn the place apart, and a lot of the crustal rebound has been a hundred meters.

What is known is some things happen in clusters, geologic active periods, where quakes are a lesser problem compared to mountains forming, crustal riffs, cracks in the earth blowing out hot gas, ash, for years.

The Ring of Fire, named after a Johnny Cash song, also goes through very active periods, and the pace does seem to be picking up.

The last two Japan quakes mentioned killed over a hundred thousand, and so it has been through history.

Some of it is population density, an automobile crash in China can kill hundreds. Like Haiti, after the city was leveled by a quake that killed most, they rebuilt at the same location. Hey! It worked for 200 years.

Alex is moving to Southern Cal with camera, to catch the big one. It is next on the list. If there is an activist god, LA should be on the Smite List.

If there is anything to Global Warming, we should know it by Vintage years in the grape harvest. All I see is Vin Ordinaire. Show me the best five years in the history of wine, happening recently.

.

For example the Siberian and Devonian traps. These upheavals wiped out 95 percent of life on the planet. They had nothing to do with humans since they occurred hundreds of millions of years before humans.

If there was an 8.9 earthquake in L.A., it would cause a couple hundred billion dollars in capital improvements. :P
