A progesterone hormone injection, used to prevent preterm labor, used to be $10 a shot. Now that the FDA has assigned an exclusive right to create the easily-made formula to one company, KV Pharmaceuticals, the price has risen to $1500. Almost all of it is pure profit, and KV Pharma did not develop the drug or pay for its trials: the taxpayer did, via the National Institute for Health. It is said to be the only drug proven to prevent pre-term birth, and an expert cited by ABC News suggests that the profession was snookered into supporting the assignment as a quality standardization measure.

Who says that republicans are the only ones who hate women?

I think some drug company is giving campaign money to Obama. Typical Chicago style politics.

Not the first time this has happened with the FDA...

Anyway, it sounds like KV's reasoning for the insane price is that it costs just a bit less than paying for a pre-term birth. "Are we not merciful?"

The problem though is that the cost is going to be dumped on insurance. Either they won't cover the drug due to cost, or will have to raise rates(which everyone just loves).

Why were people blaming insurance companies again? They are actually looking like the victims.

No one blamed them, they are simply pointing out the business choices they will have to make which will ultimately affect consumers, the blame still lies with the FDA for creating a monopoly.

The FDA is own by the corporations and we'd be better off without it. I've said this a few times lately on this board. I know you guys don't think we can survive with Consumer advocacy can be done independently. Most of the so called regulation in this country is just corporations trying to stifle competition. The system is inherently corrupt.

An excellent example of what happens when states intervene in the market; usually nothing good.

It doesn't say anything about politics in that article. When the FDA does something like that, it's usually because FDA officials got paid off.

Heads of the FDA (and thereby their staff and actions) are appointed by the president.

Which is why there was so much food poisoning while Bush was in office.

Typical, blame Bush for everything. I seriously doubt Bush would support food poisoning...

He'd support the relaxing of regulations that would lead to it. After all, big government bad and regulations cost money.

Back to the point: democrats hate women, too.

This actually isn't the first instances of food poisoning, there were food poisoning issues during the Clinton years too. I'm wondering though if the FDA was too busy looking at porn to do their job.

Kinda sad you are only just now figuring that out (though Republicans actually don't hate women).

You really are oblivious to my actual postings if that's your response.

You do not take Beck's word as Gospel Truth, therefore you are a radical left-wing Marxist Communist Nazi baby-killing Obama supporter. Those are the only two possible political persuasions.

You are jumping to conclusions. Just because a group of people are willing to do something that hurts people for the love of money does not automatically make them republican. It doesn't even make them more likely to be republican. You keep up with the news, haven't you seen stories about democrats getting busted for ethics violations too? When I was younger I had several incidents where a med I was taking was resold at prices that insurance wouldn't pay for, and that was during the Clinton administration.

As for the food poisoning, most of the cases I heard about were from food imported from Mexico, and it was mostly raw meat and plants.
