Here it is: MPs run as they currently do – a smallish number of candidates stand for a single constituency. People cast a vote as they currently do – each selects a single candidate to cast their vote for. Once all of the votes have been cast, you pick one voter at random and use their choice.

That's just weird. Politics is too important to be left to a completely random choice.

It looks like AV is going to lose out to FPTP in the referendum based on the last polling that i heard. Disappointing.

There is also a problem if the people standing for election actively become more and more extreme with time.

Arrow's Theorem. There are no perfectly fair voting systems. None.

The suggestion in the original post meets all the criteria except "nondictatorship", which is a somewhat arbitrary criterion specifically designed to exclude that possibility.

Normally we'd think of dictatorships as nondemocratic, but for parlaimentary positions, when we could expect the random selection to average out over the entire body, it might be workable.

No, I don't think anyone will choose it. It's still an interesting concept, though.

I like the "jury duty" model for elections.

Everyone who's eligible (citizen, over 18, not currently in jail, what have you) has a chance of being picked randomly to serve on your city council/county council/state or provincial legislature/federal legislature or parliament. Those chosen then have to work together within the framework of a constitution and existing laws to figure out how to run things.

Sounds crazy, but it just might work. If you like SF, Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars Trilogy" (the three novels Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) outline a hypothetical society of Mars colonists from Earth who do indeed implement such a system. (I think it's mostly in Green Mars where it's discussed, but I haven't read them in a while and don't remember for sure.)

It's a great way to avoid partisan bickering and extremism, at least.

STV is probably the best voting system.

We are about to re-enter this debate here, currently an MMP system.

STV appeals to me, although I think any system works in as much as people want to work together for the common good, when they don't I don't think any systemic option acts as a solution

Random would actually work great if the authorities were elected for only one month or some short period.
