I've always been a big fan of zombie films, and my favorite is Night of the Living Dead (the remake directed by Tom Savini, not the original that was made by George Romero).

Anyways I know this might sound a bit geeky, but I sometimes fantasize about what it would be like if a zombie outbreak really did happen and I had to fight for survival.

One of the things I wonder about is if people with Asperger's Syndrome like myself could survive in these movies? I think it could be possible especially when it depends on the type of Aspie. Aspies are known for having obsessive-complusive disorder (like I do), and I think if one of their obsessions was about zombies then when a zombie outbreak happens they would be well prepared for survival. Maybe they wouldn't be capable of dealing and working together with other survivors, but by themselves I think they could handle themselves if they're already resourceful and watch enough zombie movies to have an idea of how to fight them and keep from getting turned into a zombie.

Personally if I were in a zombie movie I wouldn't use guns as they run out of bullets and are hard to aim when you're untrained in firearms. I would stick with melee weapons like maybe a long knife or hammer with a pointy back to destroy the brain of the zombies. I would try to wear a thick leather jacket for protection so that it won't be easy for zombies to bite and infect me, and if these were the slow kind of zombies I would just try to walk fast away from them and save my energy for when I really need it. In fact if I were to try and seek a shelter, I would find an abandon convient store with barred windows and hide in there, living off the food and supplies stocked in the building.

Also not that it really means anything, but I took one of those zombie survival quizzes on the internet and scored a 76%. :P

I think I'd do pretty well, I am a low-emotion person which improves the chances that I would think rationally when things get tough. If you get scared and freak out, you do something stupid and the zombies get you.

Have you ever noticed that people in zombie films have never seen a zombie film?

I think this means that you and I won't ever encounter zombies, as we have both seen quite a few zombie films.

My logic isn't entirely all there I know.

Lets see:

1) Most Aspies have average or above average IQ

2) We are natural loners so being the sole survivor in a town would be no problem for most of us

3) The a good number of us lack empathy might keep you alive because you are not running off to save someone

4) Most of us are creative which is always a plus in a survival situation.

Not only would I survive I might even thrive in a zombie apocalypse if the zombies are the George Romero style slow moving zombies. 8) :P

I have noticed that. That's one of the things I loved about Zoey's character in the game Left 4 Dead, the fact that her profile states that what has kept her alive is that before the zombie outbreak she spent more time watching horror movies then she did focusing on school.

The main character in Zombieland, if not aspie, at least is super nerd. And he has his list of rules:

"double tap"

"restrooms are scary"

"don't be a hero"

"cardiovascular"

"stretching"

And his new one added by the Woody Harrelson character:

"Appreciate the little things"

Give me some time to build up my droid army, and I will survive the apocalypse.

Due to dead zombie body count, you would have to keep moving location...

But since Aspies were the original tool\system inventors then a Zombie honeypot could be designed. Sort of like a livestock handling systems setup with transportation.

But planning for Aspie Zombies would also be needed, fear them.

If the zombies are the classic, slow ones, an Aspie character might be able to survive because of the tendency to stay logical under pressure rather than judging the situation using emotion (thus running off to save others and getting themselves killed). However, if the zombies are the Uroboros-type from Resident Evil 5, it won't make a difference whether the character is Aspie or not.

I don't think real-world logic applies to a game that has a muscular guy who can punch boulders and lots of female characters doing backflips and karate kicks in high heels.

But yeah I could see an Aspie surving against the classic slow undead zombies like the ones from Romero's movies. The faster ones like from 28 Days Later or the Dawn of the Dead remake might be a bit harder because they move very quickly and Aspies usually need time to observe their surroundings before they figure out what to do. It's a good thing that Aspies are very observant, but at the same time it's bad that it usually takes them a minute or two for the observation to register in their mind. So when dealing with a fast zombie that could be difficult.

Also I wouldn't say all Aspies would be completely cold hearted as to not save anyone. Aspies are not Sociopaths, and while I guess it's true they wouldn't be going out of their way to rescue strangers I'm sure if it were people they were attached to such as family or close friends they would put some effort into trying to help them. All Aspies usually have at least one person they are attached to emotionally like a parent or someone who is seen as a caregiver. However they would probably do very well as lone survivors, Aspies tend to function better in an isolated enviroment where they're not forced to have to work with NTs. Plus if there's anything Romero's films have taught us it's that a major crisis like a zombie outbreak tends to bring out the worst in ordinary people, so the fact that Aspies tend to avoid social groups would make it a lot better for them to survive and not deal with crazy people who do stupid stuff because the world is in chaos.

And that pretty much explains my social skills! and also why I tend to do better when I skim

hopefully, we wouldn't be the kind of people who back into dark rooms, dark hallways, accept dares, and have wild s*x when people are dying.

We probably would be the ones who turn all the lights on, and load up with cutlery and ammunition...;)

I can't wait! When does this Zombie Apocalypse commence?

Since we're on the subject, has anyone here seen Burial Ground? Is it just me, or is the man-boy who eats his mother's nipple more disturbing than all the other zombies in that movie?! !!

I think I would. I would simply go North into the wilderness and avoid people and zombies altogether, living off the land, with my hunting bow and the tools needed to survive. It gets very cold here, and even colder up North. Corpses don't do too well in the cold :D
