Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking these forums for days. I've been looking for an outlet and some answers to my AS. This place seems to be the resource I've been looking for :)

A little bit about me. I'm a 23 year old male living in Downtown Chicago. I work as a project manager and system's administrator for a high profile technology company. As a child, I've always been extremely unique. All of my teachers thought I was ADD or ADHD. All of them wanted me on ritalin. I never had friends until late high school. All my teachers wanted me in special ed classes and wanted me to get my head checked, but my mother refused to comply.

It wasn't until a few months ago where my mom finally told me that she thinks I have aspergers. She said when I was younger, she took me to doctors to try to get my behavior under control at school and try to figure out why I had such a hard time making friends. The doctors told her that I may have AS, but she never did pursue a further diagnosis. She wanted me to grow up as a normal child and to experience the same challenges as my fellow classmates. In short, she was afraid that I would use my AS as a crutch. I still thank her for this decision to this very day :)

I recently discovered that I may have AS after my nephew was diagnosed as severely autistic. After seeing his behavior and reading up on his condition, I slowly started to realize that his behavior was not much different than mine. This was an eye opening realization.

I have not been officially diagnosed, but I'm thinking about pursuing a diagnosis. I want to know the ins and outs of this condition so I can function normally as a professional. My AS tenancies do affect my work. I want to figure out how to cope with them and be "normal." [I've seen the term "NeuroTypical thrown around for Normal.] I have a girlfriend that I'm going to be asking to be my wife. She understands that I'm unusual. She accepts it and loves me for it. There are some challenges though (that's for another post ;) )

Anyways, tl;dr. I'm new and I believe I have AS. I can't wait to speak to you all!

Welcome to WrongPlanet. I have Aspergers but wasn't diagnosed until I was in my forties. I was diagnosed with attention deficit as a child, what they called "hyperactive" back in the 1960s when I was growing up. They put me on Ritalin from the age of five until I was fourteen when I chose to stop taking it. If you identify with many of the concerns and issues of regular posters here, you might very well have Aspergers.

Good to see you here and hope to see you around.

Since I'm some years younger than you, I can't advise personally how to cope with or minimise your tendencies, but I'm sure someone else here can if you elaborated in the general forum.
Yes, there's Neurotypical and Neurodiverse. I am of the latter, as are most here. I frown upon the word "normal" in this context.
Hope you enjoy your time here :).

I'm in agreement with you on this one. I don't like the context either.

That sounds a LOT like what I went through growing up in the 1960s and 1970s.....

BTW, welcome abroad, Modesty. :D I have always loved visiting central Chicago and to this day, should lightning ever strike and I get a job offer in the Downtown Chicago area, I'd *SNAP* at it, even though, yes, I am a lifelong to-the-core Packers fan (my family has had season tix at Lambeau Field since 1962).

Hello,

I read your post, I think if you have a lot in common with the people on this website you might have AS. One thing in particular that I hadn't seen mentioned yet was sensory issues, if you have a history of those and they are still a problem plus having all the OCD and anxiety/social issues/communication issues would probably make you a good case for AS.

Anyways I am also 23, and also living in Chicago, and I'm really interested in music. Classical, Jazz, and rock are all huge interests, I'm unfortunately working a sales type job which I don't like. However its very cool to meet someone dealing with similar issues (AS) who also happens to live so close.

Again good meeting you
