Racism Against Germans

My Mom has encountered a few mean German people, and now she thinks that every single German person is a lying, moron. She's a nice person generally, but this is just terrible. She even went as far as reading forums on the internet titled, "Why Germans Suck Butt"! There is a name for what my Mom is being, and it's called racism. I almost feel embarrassed to be her daughter! And whenever I try to tell her that she's being racist, she tells me to shut the hell up! She's no better then her own racist mother and all the racist mothers before her! Is there any way I can try and fix her?

Racism from relatives gives me stomachache. If I had a racist friend, that friendship would end. It would take violence for me to end a relationship with a family member. I would ignore it, myself, and give thanks I didn't get infected by it.

Germans are on the list of "acceptable targets." Basically, it's OK to say bad things about them.

Which is kind of messed up.

By no means am I siding with your mom, but being German is a nationality, not a race. Your mom is prejudiced, but not racist.

With that said, you should try to let her know that the few Germans she's encountered are not representative of all Germans.

There's a lot of racism against the Arian race. Why can't people just leave each other alone?

Technically is it racism or xenophobia?

In England this sort of thing towards Germans is almost okay, it's a bit silly really.

My father (German) was like this with English people, he was generally prejudice towards everyone, he had a lovely little trait where he'd have me walking round with a golliwog to show other people how his [English] daughter loved the [insert the 'N' word here] - basically he didn't like the mixed race society here in England. He also got fired for calling a black doctor a 'black [insert 'B' word for person without father here]' at the hospital where he worked. He was actually a very gentle man and I loved him dearly...but dear god he was a prejudice $#*^!

You can't change people's prejudices over night, if it's something they're raised with it's hard for them to see it any other way.
Just let her know you don't want to hear it, not much else you can do I'm afraid.

I am part german...although I dont claim it as much as I tout my Irish and native american heritage, but I am really a heinz 57.
There has been some talk about possible jewish and african american ancentory as well. However, my dad is german about half german and although he is very religious, thus homophobic, he only racists against mexicans but where he lives, everyone hates the mexicans so I cant blame that on his german roots. Aside from those flaws, he is a very honest person...kinda has an aspie's honesty of telling it like it is. As far as mean, well he is not mean, unless you are an athiest (or he thought you were one), a percieved satan worshiper (aka goth), mexican or gasp! homosexual. But I still cant blame that on the fact his german, cause his dad is pure german and is the nicest man I know, although he is alittle shy. I think he is an aspie too. When I visit him, we watch the history channel together and discovery and Nat Geo. He is like me, I dont have much interest in watching fiction...unless it is really good, but love to watch educational channels.
I however dated a german who fit the decription your mother potrays, but people are individuals and should not all be judged by the actions of a small sample of folks.

I'd say that, at this stage, she is being stereotypical, not full-blown racist.

Anyways, I am of tons of German descent.

Being prejudiced against a group of people is a bit silly,like being prejudiced against everyone with blonde hair.
Every nation has a mixture of different origins.Modern Germans are only one branch of the Germanic race in any case.If your mum is
going to be prejudiced against Germanic people in general then she may as well include the following :

American - ALL OF THE ABOVE !

Some of my french relations have a lot of bitterness towards the germans. But then this did kinda happen to them so they do have their reasons having lived under 4 years of nazi occupation.

Just goes to show what you get for having crap old decrepid senile men as your top field marshals
