why are justin bieber, taylor swift, and that homosexual american idol (no offense, don't remember his name) suddenly making their pop-star way into such an alternative- music-dominant clothing franchise? well, i guess i can take that back if Drake and Rihanna and all that noise can be in the store too but still, what's going on? Just thinkin out loud i guess. we're shifting into a weird generation change and it's hard to take.

I went to Hot Topic a few days ago - normally I avoid this site because sorry but it was never all that alternative, it was always geared towards 13 year old scene or emo kids, however I did notice it's gone down-hill CONSIDERABLY. Looking round it's gone a lot more mainstream, there was very little on there that was alternative...I thought I had accidently typed in the wrong address.

I think Hot Topic is owned by Gap? If so then it should be no surprise.

And every time I go into Hot Topic I always find myself surrounded by people in their 60's and 70's. wtf?

I noticed this too and I asked a very nice heavily-pierced fellow with a mohawk. He said they were told they needed to be more "mainstream" so all the cool goth/dark stuff they used to sell can be found on their website, and all the lame "spencer's gifts" crap they have now is what Corporate wants them to sell. Made me sad. :(

Yeah I've defidentally noticed that. Don't get me wrong, I love Hot Topic, but I've seen a lot of preppy people walk in who look like they should be in Aeropostale or something like that!! ! And then they look at me funny because I have blue hair! THE. STORE. IS. NOT. MADE. FOR. THEM! I'm not a rude person, or an arse hole, but going to Hot Topic is SUPPOSED to be a place where I can shop without getting judged. And they sell BIG TIME RUSH STUFF. My 8 year old cousin watches Big Time Rush. My 11 year old sister is TOO OLD for Big Time Rush!! ! WHY ARE THEY SELLING MERCH FROM THEM?! !! !

I decided I'd be totally punk to the max and wear old preppy clothes from Salvation Army I'd buy for like 50 cents. I figure it like wearing captured enemy clothes. Cheaper to not be unique. Besides, I tend to attract myself enough attention by just existing, so I don't need my clothes to attract me anymore.

But uh, yeah, I noticed this too, I didn't ever physically go to Hot Topic before this (since I only go to the mall like 2-3 times a year) happened, but I was surprised the store of totally punk rock kids now has Rhianna and whatnot. Oh well. Doesn't affect me any, but I find it a bit ironic. Oh well, I guess it would suck if you're into that kinda thing, to see your favorite store ruined like that.

I've found a few good shirts in Hot Topics on occasion. My Behemoth shirt came from one.

I get most of mine at shows now though.

Hot topic sells over-priced clothing to scene kids and posers.

I have had the misfortune of visiting that store a couple of times. Most of the people that I saw were 13 year old posers and middle aged women obsessed with the twilight series
since I have no desire to be a cool scene kid than I have no reason to step foot into a hot topic again.
It's way over-priced anyway.

I used to shop at Hot Topic because the clothes had thin, breathable fabric and colourful designs that had unsociable sayings on them which catered to my... unsociability. I wore them until I was 21. Two guys I had liked had previously told me that the clothes looked kind of silly, and finally, when the third guy said pretty much the same thing to me, I handed them all down to my friends. And off they went! All of my Tripp pants, and bright shirts with angry cartoon characters on them, and plastic necklaces that broke after three weeks of wear. All of my jackets with pink and black stripes, and various cat eared accessories. They disappeared from my wardrobe forever in large dark trash bags that had an uncanny resemblance to the dark, drapey, unfriendly facade that I was simulating for far, far too long.

I ended up going to Ross and buying some nice, flowery sundresses that I felt fit me nicer. I looked friendlier! More guys would approach me. I had an easier time finding work. People seemed to talk to me more respectfully.

As silly and materialistic as it is, what you wear can really impact the way people treat you. I'm happy Hot Topic is selling items that are friendlier looking. I personally would much rather see a thirteen-year-old girl in a t-shirt with a smiling vector cupcake decal on it than some angry P.O.ed bunny with a rude remark steered at me.

(This isn't geared towards the gothic style particularly. I really like flowing black velour dresses. I give Stevie Nicks two thumbs up! But if it can't be pulled off authentically, then it just comes across as looking kind of malevolent.)

Spencer's has some very interesting dirty toys. I agree that it is more alternative than Hot Topic.

I like Hot Topic, but I have noticed it's grown increasingly more difficult to find things I would wear at their stores. Of course, I'm a boot-cut jeans and t-shirt kind of girl with the occasional pair of cargo pants but still, I did really like a lot of their shirts.

When I was younger, the pants appealed to me as well. Especially when I was passing as male.
