I'm feeling a bit lonely today so joined up with a large internet forum for mums. There was a discussion about Asperger's so I stuck my head in the door, so to speak. Totally horrified. The general consensus is that us aspies are just self-centred, selfish asses who need to have it 'knocked out of us'. And this is from you middle class mums. 8O Needless to say, my membership won't be in use.

I can be sometimes, although I try not to be. Still, I've met plenty of NT's that are so much higher in assholitity than me it's ridiculous.

I'd love to link it, but then I'd get banned from this forum and have no choice but to join them 8O

Some of the threads on parenting websites can be really awful. I'm a member of a website called Netmums (UK). I tend to keep away from the forums that can get heated. A few months ago, a member was wanting to vent about the other members, before leaving for good. She said, 'ADHD does not exist, it's just an excuse for bad parenting', among some other derogatory remarks. This really infuriated me and hit a raw nerve. Thankfully, she didn't receive a single reply in support of her belief. I reported the thread to the moderators and it was removed.

In response to your question, no I don't believe I'm selfish or self-centred. As an example, I regularly post replies to other mums on that website, giving advice about loads of stuff, with no benefit to be gained or wanted for myself.

Some think so but I don't think I am.

I've been told as much on a variety of occasions. That doesn't make it right, but I certainly sympathize with you about the rudeness of that statement.
As for the accuracy of such a sentiment... I do feel like that sometimes after I've just really hurt someone's feelings, or made a dreadful mistake that has caused a lot of trouble for someone else. So these people probably have some reasons behind saying things like that. The trouble is that they've generalized it to include anyone who has AS, and that is most definitely not right.

Maybe those people have had bad experience with aspies and it's very unfortunate it made them bitter and critical about us.
