Does this ever happen to anyone else, that when you're trying to talk to somebody (specially if you're anxious, stressed out or tired) the sentences and words sound right in your head, but when you actually attempt to say it, it all comes out wrong? like I have a sentence formed right before saying it, and it's phonetically and grammatically correct, but what actually comes out of my mouth a moment later, is pronounced wrong and words even get displaced within the sentence? Could it only be the lack of practice + anxiety?

That happens to me all the time and I just put it down to stress and anxiety.

The only thing I've ever been told, and I'm still trying to see if it works, is to take a deep breath before you try speaking... or if you feel you're being attacked, say "I can't deal with this right now, I will talk about it later" and walk away.

Poor communication skills are common in AS, and I'm no different. It often seems like there's a filter between my brain and my mouth, and only about 20% of what I meant gets through. I also have a stuttering problem where I get "stuck" on a word because I can't get the next one out.

The old cognitive delays in action again. I have put my foot in my mouth so many times in 60 years that if I had a penny for each time I did this, I could probably live on it.

This happens to me more and more recently, Ill know exactly what I want to say, but then Ill get tongue-tied when I try to speak. I do agree with the people who say its just a nervous thing, its a real pain in the ass though.

It's not "a nervous thing" for me at all. You should see me in my therapy sessions. It's the calmest, quietest, most relaxing, least nervous part of my life that involves interacting with someone else, and yet I'm still a train wreck when it comes to getting words out and expressing myself.

Oh yes, all the time. It seems to be that the part of my brain that forms the words and the parts that moves my mouth and lips are operated by two different people. It is most frustrating when you feel you have worked out exactly what you wish to say but instead out comes garbage, so much so that even I can't follow it and end up just abandoning the sentence mid flow. My belief is that this is closely related or connected to my my troubles listening and processing what others say to me.

All I can say is that sometimes for me it's a nervous setting, and sometimes for me it's because there are too many emotions tied to the topic, or it is so important to get information out right, with just the right meaning, that yeah... Word jumble.

All I can say is

Welcome to the club.

This happens to me all the time, but I've found it worse if there are a lot of people around. With just one or two people around I can speak clearly most of the time, but at a big party I become such a "mush mouth," I can barely speak. I'm not sure if it's stress/anxiety, over-stimulation, or what, but it's annoying.

All the freakin time. It is so annoying! It is like English isn't my first language.

It is like I will try to say something and the syllables will be in the wrong place. Or my brain will get distracted in middle of a sentence and insert a random word from my other train of thought, or just insert a wrong word that is similar in meaning to the right word, but just a little off. (Like "train" and "car" or "tomorrow" and "yesterday")

And it does happen more when there are more distractions and people around or I am thinking about two things at once. Taking a deep breath and focusing on getting one word out at a time helps. Caffeine helps tremendously for some odd reason. Not speaking in crowded places is much better though, lol.

Two of my siblings had speech therapy, but my speech problem has never been apparent until now because I never talked until recently. But even then, it isn't a problem with how I pronounce words, but just what words come out of my mouth.

I feel this way a lot when it comes to feelings. I have words in my head I want to say but it feels like they are stuck in there and I can't get it all out. It happens in other situations too that are non feelings.

It only happens when I'm:

Tired
Stressed
Upset
Bored
Lazy
Stuck
Anxious
Needing to Speak Fast
Pressured
When I'm in big crowds.
