I've seen a lot of posts of specific ASD traits I have, and some I didn't realize were ASD traits.

But I'd like to start a post, if not already began, of specific ASD traits that others may have that YOU don't suffer with, or have improved with.

Such as:
-Lack of Eye Contact
-Severe/Mild Sensory Overload
-Recognizing Faces
-Good Long Term Memory
-Bad Short Term Memory
-'Temper Tantrums'/Meltdowns
-Reading Body Language
-Not knowing what to say
-Monotonous Voice
-Obsessive Interests
-Understanding Sarcasm, Jokes, etc.
-Any ADHD/OCD tendencies, etc.

And other traits I haven't specified...

I'll start it off.....

One ASD trait I Don't have and/or Have improved in is....
Understanding Jokes.......
I still struggle in this, but not nearly as much as I did say, 5 years ago. I might play if off by laughing when others do, or may even stand still and think "What am I supposed to do?", but I can comprehend when people are joking to an extent.....

They have both.

Everyone who knows about my diagnosis thinks i don't like hugs. I hate that! I'm desperate for human contact!

I don't notice that I have too much trouble looking people in the eyes, but I think that is from getting into trouble when younger for that. I don't feel like I'm any smarter or more talented than the average person. I like math, but I'm not great at it. I see patterns in everything, but I don't remember strings of numbers.

I don't have the understanding jokes/sarcasm problem, but that's probably because my house is the most sarcastic household on earth... I'd be constantly baffled if I didn't get it! I don't think my interests are particularly obsessive, which is almost a shame. I don't think I learn nearly enough about the things I'm interested in. I'm not sure if I have a monotonous voice or not. No-one's really told me if that's the case or not...

I've improved with many things, but it depends on what timescale, as 10 years ago I'd have been oblivious to everything; 5 years ago I'd have been oblivious to about half the things and in the past 3-4 years I've been in a position of improving on my "flaws".

I really don't have any issues with food, except that I like it to be crunchy...and I make the same things all the time because it is easier that way.

I always under the impression that they were practically the same, in certain situations. Certain people may react with meltdown as if they had temper tantrums. I have meltdowns from time to time to, so I see what you're saying Xayah, to an extent...

I'm alright with eye contact and I don't seem to have all the adversion to sensory experiences (apart from touching paper! >.<).

I love all types of food. There's pretty much nothing I won't eat and love.

I am hyperattuned to body language and read it accurately as confirmed by NTs

I have a monotonous voice only when I'm not bothering to uphold self-awareness of how I seem to others, which is rare.

I don't have restricted behaviors. I HATE routine, it depresses the living daylights out of me, and I LOVE novelty. One exception: listening to a favorite song over and over again on occasion.

I don't feel I have any trouble understanding jokes. Sometimes I just have a different sense of humor from the joke-teller. This might be fundamentally misunderstood as lack of sense of humor by NTs who seem to share a "cohesive/touchy-feely" sense of humor whose primary goal is social cohesion rather than making people amused.

And for the love of God I HAVE EMPATHY!

I can say that listening to music and trying to read the meanings of it, has helped me in terms of understanding jokes and sarcasm, and I feel I've made progress there.

I don't think I have a problem with any food, just when I eat it, my eye waters or my nose runs of mucus uncontrollably when it hits my taste buds. If it doesn't happen, it's probably because I didn't chew...

I can be very sociable for a period of time.

After that I need to go lie down and rest. It is so exhausting!

From what I understand, a temper tantrum is controllable and a meltdown isn't. Tantrums can be dealt with by behaviorist techniques like not rewarding the behavior ('even if you scream and cry, I still won't buy a chocolate bar'), but a meltdown is best dealt with by dealing with the emotions and forgetting about reward/punishment.

Anyway, autistic traits I don't have:

* avoidance of eye contact (I do make too much eye contact on occasion)

* lack of pretend play (quite the opposite, actually)

* insistence on routine (I get confused more easily without routine, but it doesn't bug me)

* literalistic obediance to rules (I was fairly defiant as a kid, even now I always want some wiggle room for rules)

I might just add meltdowns on the list to prevent further confusion.......

-Lack of eye contact
-Sensitivity to loud sound
-Love of animals
-Rigid posture
-Problems recognizing faces
-Saying offensive things by accident
-Dislike of crowds
-Dislike of social interaction
-Problems understanding humour
-Sensitive to light
-Being able to read facial expressions and tone of voice
-I'm not very good with math and science
-Blank facial expression

I'm sometimes wonder if I really have it or not............

I guess I just have mild PDD-NOS because I do have some symptoms.

My number trait is meltdowns, and if I didn't have anxiety, my meltdowns wouldn't be nearly as bad.
