Does anybody tend to look at the ground when they walk? Whnever I walk either down the street or wherever I always tend to look at the ground instead of look forward. I was taking a walk the other night and somebody in a van stopped and asked me "Are you looking for something" and I said "no" and he said "Then why are you looking at the ground" and I made up the quickest excuse (A good one at that since I was walking through a foot of snow) "There's a lot of snow on the ground" and I got a pretty nice reply "Stevie Wonder could see how much snow is on the f****** ground!" I sure find a lot of loose change and pennies when looking at the ground.

Just wondering if anybody has any imput.

Yep - same here. I think I mainly do it to avoid having to look at anybody and getting "freaked out" by it.

I often look to the ground when I am walking...and bump into people or things. Or if I do not look to the ground, I look up and miss something on the ground and then I fall. I am exagerating it a little, but it is true.

What I am trying to say is that if I look both to the ground AND to what is in front of me, I tend to get dizzy, especially knowing I walk quite fast in general (You could call me Forrest Gump, because I am always running.)

I like to look up more than down to the ground because up there, there is the sky and I am into astronomy. :D

When I was younger I used to focus on the ground, but now I seem to have developed a kind of fade out mechanism.
I tend to try not to focus on anything- its like I become aware of objects or people in my path but only vaguely enough to avoid them (and I don't always do such a great job of that either). When I'm in a busy place I'm not completely aware of my surroundings- I couldn't tell you the hair colour of the person who had just past me for instance.

i'm fairly short-sighted, which is great cos everything's a bit of a blur, so i can look where i want. i wonder what my eye contact would be like if i wore my glasses more... (i only wear them for computering and driving).

nope i look directly ahead most of the time but do not make eye contact or very fast. Sometimes i can not tell what way someone wants to go but i have gotten better with time. oh and looking a long way out helps guess what way they might go.

I tend to look at the ground, for 2 reasons...

1. Sensory integration issues- If I don't have visual points of reference, I can't maintain my balance. The ground helps with this respect.

2. Patterns. I get drawn into patterns, and the ground usually has intricate ones (floor tiles, sidewalk brickjs, etc).

If I don't look at the ground when I walk, I trip over things, or even nothing.

I look at the ground to avoid looking at others often and also to see what things I can see there.

I also frequently look at the ground... For one thing, lights are often quite overwhelming and it helps to keep my head down, and for another, it helps me keep my balance and not trip over things (as a few others have claimed as well).

I was a classic ground looker-at'er when I walked. I never really thought of it being out of the norm until someone pointed it out to me one day at school.

Having just studied myself a bit more on my trip down the Chinese this evening (I know how to live :)), I walk looking at a sort of 45 degree angle downwards so I can see where I'm going without having to look at anybody else, although I take a glance upwards on a level every 20 seconds or so just to make sure.... weird....

I always look at the ground when I walk. I also count the steps when I go up or down them here in my house. If I don't count the steps, I trip and fall!

I s'pose I must because I nearly always follow the patterns in the ground somehow. Never stepping on cracks and such.
