I am 17 and I can't seem to controll my spacing out issues. I am always daydreaming about something and I seem off to other people. I don't know why but I have a hard time doing the simpleist things and can't seem to remember well. I am often thought as stupid by my peers because of this or I'm thought up as slow. I frustrate my teachers because I always mess up with the directions. Is this just me?

Nope. Not just you at all. People have been known to shake me back to reality. I frequently go off into my head. I like it there.

But yeah, it can be problematic. I lose hours sometimes without realizing it... I'll just be staring off into space, thinking about this or that or nothing in particular. It is eh... not helpful when it comes to being productive.

You and a lot of others here, including me. Not only do I daydream a lot, I do it without even realizing I'm doing it. It's common for me to "wake up" and realize I've been spaced out for the last hour. So you're not alone. Expect plenty of replies for this one.

I mess up with directions and space out, especially when I was in elementary school.

Yeah this is one of the reasons I don't feel like driving a car in the traffic.....I would prefer not to space out and get hit by a semi truck for instance.

I don't space out for long periods of time but I do it frequently throughout the day. When people are talking to me I often have to get them to repeat themselves because I didn't process anything they did or said for the past couple of minutes. Thankfully I have very patient friends.

If I were too busy and unable to space out I would have a meltdown.

Oh my gosh, yes. I HAVE to have time during the day to do nothing but kind of daydream off by myself. I get cranky and anxious when I'm too busy to have some alone time, where I don't do much of anything.

But yeah, it's not just you at all. I space out a lot. I don't necessarily lose hours, but I completely miss while conversations because I'm tuning into what's going on in my head instead of what's around me. Almost every year for the first four years of elementary school, my mother would get the conference request from my teachers about it. 'She's a bright girl, I don't have any trouble from her, but she's *not* paying attention. She stares out the window all day.' Hah. And my mother would always be like ,'Girl, I know. Try having her at home.'

This got me into trouble a few times...

I remember waiting for my mum to pick me up from school when I was 9 years old.
After half an hour still no mum.
I paced the sidewalks next to school.
Mum where are you?!

Much later (not entirely sure, it felt like an hour, was probably less long) my mum finally arrived.
Mum: "Why were you not at the kindergarten building, like we agreed?"
Me: "Uh??"
I had no recollection about that.
Apparently I agreed to this and had verbally confirmed.
Not registered at all though.

Years later, I figured out a way to semi-space-out and semi-drive on quiet highways in the car.
Worked most of the time.
One time I suddenly awoke, and found myself close to the left highway border going only 80 km/h.
I had no clue where I was or how I got there, lost approximately 40 minutes of travel.

Yes, spaced out is often me. I once got in trouble for it while I was suppose to be learning a part for a play. Funny thing is, when I did this as a young child, they suspected autism. That would have been back in the 80's. As many of you know, Asperger's was only recently translated in the 90's if my memory serves me correctly, so they would have missed that diagnosis all together.

My job is basically driving and multi-tasking in the car... its really hard to stay focused... before you know it you have lost your concentration... makes you wonder how safe you are on the road...

Nope, I'm the same way. I space out all the time. It's odd because I don't space out thinking about something, I just space out. I can't really explain it. It's like having a completely blank mind for a moment or two.
