Iron Maiden VS Metallica

This is a poll to see who likes what. Iron Maiden or Metallica? Or both if you're like me and can't be pulled apart between the two. Warning it will only last 1 week so get voting. The winner will be decided. If it's both. It means they are equally best. I've also put a neither poll, so if neither is the winner, then members of WP like other Metal artists or other completely unrelated artists. I start by saying both. I love both of them. Both of their music is great, and I them both equally. Like I said, I can't be pulled apart between the two.

In both cases I didn't like their early, really heavy speed metal stages.

Loved Maiden's "Holy Smoke", "Tailgunner" and "Can I Play With Madness?", and the artwork for Fear of the Dark. Plus they're allegedly named after a steamroller.

Also loved Metallica's "Sanitarium" and "My Friend of Misery" and the Garage Days album which is hilarious. Don't like the jingoism of "Don't Tread on Me", the orchestral album or the fact that they come across as a bit thick.

Despite the drugs and the egotism, I really prefer Megadeth as Dave Mustaine seemed to have more of a sense of humour and irony.

I liked, and bought Metallica's stuff from "The Black Album" up to the (and admittedly they were largely rehashing stuff by this point) classical/metal set "S&M". I also got their next (original) album but hated most of it. I got one of their earlier albums and thought it was OK, better then their most recent. I haven't been paying much attention to them of late. There were the first musical group I got into (pretty late, I was in th 7th grade I think).

I never really got listened to Iron Maiden.

I havent listened to either band in years, but Maiden had by far a greater impact on me growing up - i think its the combination of great songwriting, catchiness & the epic approach with psychedelic undertones which they excelled at.

Overall i rate Megadeth over Metallica as well. Also i think i prefer early Exodus to early Metallica.

As far as maiden are concerned, keepers era Helloween and mid-period Running Wild probably equal them in a lot of areas, with the bonus of being harder, faster and more aggressive (whilst keeping the melodies). But like i said, Maiden have the definate edge on the epic/trippy stuff - their 10min+ songs ooze quality

I would have originally said Iron Maiden based on the fact that, up until recently, I'd heard more of their music than that of Metallica's. Now I like them both.

So, so far in 3 days, Iron Maiden is more liked than Metallica in this vote.

As of right now I'd say neither. I never really got acquainted with Iron Maiden much though, with Metallica I was getting into that 5th & 6th grade. With respect to Metallica I really liked Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets more than anything, And Justice and the Black Album were both ok at the right times. As for Load, Reload, or anything later though - not feeling it at all.

Metallica had some good albums back in the day but I can't stand their new direction. Iron Maiden are better in my book just for the sheer quantity and quality of their work, they've managed to stay fresh without betraying their roots, something that Metallica hasn't been able to do.
