The Stranglers
Hüsker Dü

Anhrefn
f****d Up
Coalesce
Filth of Mankind (Crusty stuff, possibly leaning more towards the Metal side)
Stagnation is Death (Crust again)
Rites of Spring

Eric Dolphy
Pere Ubu

Me.

Around 1990 I was listening to the local college radio station and heard a public service announcement for something. In the background was a weird song, fast with lots of guitar and a funny sounding singer saying Viva Las Vegas over and over. I called in to the station and asked what it was. They said oh that was the Dead Kennedy's. I asked what record that was from, hung up and went straight to the local record store to buy Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.

I learned that this music was callled "punk" and went to the UGA library to start researching. I read every book they had on punk rock and bought a few they didn't. The even had a media center were you could watch movies with headphones.. I watched Suburbia countless times there.

So I got into DK, X, the uk Subhumans, the Ramones, Wasted Youth, Black Flag, and most of the last 70s early 80s west coast bands. I met a guy who was hanging out in downtown Athens and he asked if I played anything. I said I was learning to play guitar so he invited me to start up a band. I was a terrible player and had old, junky gear. We went on to play a bunch of shows and I suppose are kind of well known 20 years later in the Athens scene.

Still like punk today.. I'm not as into the scene as I used to be, no longer have mohawks or dyed hair because of the job.

Even though I didn't fit in with punks (aspergers) I kind of liked them more than any other group or subculture.. they seemed more open to accepting weirdos than say the goths, or mods, or whoever.

Bowling for Soup. Probably one of the most hilarious punk rock bands out there. :P

Yep! Except some punk scenes have an even more intensely rigid social morality structure than conservative christians. Depends on the city.

I always liked the small midwest town scenes best. The subculture is always all mixed and jumbled together, so it's ok to be goth and have your best friends be a hippy and a crust lord.

i love punk music. the real stuff not the stuff that calls itself punk but has purged itself of politics. my favourite right now is rise against. a guy i know told me about them and since then theyve become my favourite. i just play their music over and over. when i was younger i listened to bad religion, the clash, the sex pistols and the like. though i cant say i agreed with the content of some of the sex pistols songs... and im not sure if tom robinson can be classed as punk. sometimes his music sounds like rock, sometimes new wave, sometimes cabaret, sometimes pop though no matter what he sounds like the politics run right through his work. oh and theres this queercore( queer punk obviusly) band called pansy division who are also a favourite. a mix of sex, politics and humour. totally perverse.

f**k yeah. The punk scene speaks to me in a way that no other scenes do. I feel as if I really connect with the philosophy, the rejection of social norms, the bluntness, the animalistic nature of it all. Street punk, anyway. As with any scene, it can turn into a pecking order battleground, when people become "too cool", but generally I love this brash playground for misfits.
