There are different functioning levels of autism and HFA/Aspergers is considred on the high end of the spectrum-autism/aspergers are called autism spectrum disorders as they share many characteristics but may not share the intensity or severity. Just because someone is autistic doesn't mean they have a cognitive disability.

Its a form of autism because autistic people have the same trouble as aspergers people. Its apart of their problem. A Form of autism means exactly that its a part of autism ,and theres many other problems autistic people have that aspergers people dont.

I am socially ret*d and an NT!

Well, I like to consider myself NT now cause it's been undetectable really for so long. Maybe I'm dreaming.. But hey, so what!

I have classic autism and I am not some ret*d spaz either. Thanks for the terribly stereotype though! By the way, I also go to university, function without doping myself up, and have a near 4.0 GPA. And I have moderate (not mild) classic autism. I think you should do some research before you go around calling us all ret*d spazzes!

Are you sure you are not a ret*d? You have adopted as truth the worst of autistic stereotypes. Or have you not yet gained the capacity for clear reasoning vis-a-vis your college education?

I'm not a hard case who stims all day either. Autism Speaks does not speak for me, but it sure speaks for you. There are some aspies who stim and some profoundly autistic people who don't stim.

This is offensive, I am autistic and I happen to stim most of the day, does that mean I don't deserve your respect or that I am a ret*d?

If you had some experiance with people on the lower end of the spectrum or midway you would see a lot of yourself in them if you knew what you were looking for.

The terms 'ret*d' and 'spaz' are no more socially acceptable than to use words like 'n****r' and 'k*e'. I think it would help you a lot to adjust your terminology so people will answer your question without spending their time freaking out over your bad language.

Autism encompasses a spectrum of disorders from the lowest of low functioning autistics, to some high functioning folks with Asperger's who can pass as neurotypical.

Just like the term 'diabetes' includes people who need insulin shots, and people who can control their blood sugar with a strict diet alone.

People who have questions about the meaning of terms like 'autism' ought to, as their first step, look the term up on something like Wikipedia and inform themselves of the basics before jumping to conclusions that might end up embarrassing them.

They're the same because both involve difficulties in social interaction and a tendency towards repetitive behavior.

It's a continuum. At one end you have a very aloof person with severe delays in many skills and a lot of very noticeably odd behavior, at the other end you have a socially awkward highly intelligent person who has intense interests. And then you have everyone in between, as well.

I'm a highly verbal, intelligent college student. And a couple years ago, my best friend was a minimally verbal autistic 10 year old who wore diapers. Despite how different we seem on the outside, he had every single one of my quirks taken to an extreme. His reactions were all stuff I wanted to do but suppressed out of fear of judgement. His body language was easier for me to read than anyone else I'd met. And the things that bothered me but were tolerable were the same things that sent him into a meltdown.

Also, if you were ret*d, or had cerebral palsy (spaz actually means spastic), that wouldn't make you any less valuable as a human being. I think you need to examine your disability prejudices. All your skills make your life easier, but they don't affect your worth.

This. Please try not to use those terms because they're very offensive to anybody who does have severe autism or anybody who does stim. Neither being autistic nor stimming make you a ret*d or a spaz.

Please try and read and learn a bit more about it before posting things which could offend and insult others.

Asperger's is just a different way of thinking and functioning and percieving the world. It means you have some difficulties and some qualities. Even though you might struggle with social situations that doesn't mean you're not intelligent or that you don't have qualities.

I guess it's the same with autism, only autism can be a lot more severe than Asperger's and impact a person's ability to function in certain situations. It's a spectrum. Asperger's is an "autistic spectrum disorder" generally milder than the others, but people on the spectrum all generally have a lot in common. Obviously everyone is different because we'd be getting nowhere if we were all clones.

Just as there are people with Asperger's on here there are people with other forms of autism too and they're still talented and amazing people. So don't be so quick to judge and make incorrect assumptions.
