Do you hear a voice in your head when you read?

I came across this article that talks about dyslexics not hearing an inner voice when they read, or at all really. I don't either, and I know I'm not dyslexic. I've always been a strong reader. I'm wondering if it's more to do with thinking in pictures. I don't think that I ever really hear my voice in my head, but rather I have a quick succession of pictures as I think thoughts. If that makes any sense. lol

I "hear" a voice. It's pretty non-descript from an audio standpoint. You might say it sounds like how I imagine my own voice sounds. I've got mad ADHD tho, so sometimes the voice drifts off and says it's own thing.

I have an internal voice too...it reads like I speak...all the essays I write feel like narrations

I hear a voice, but I've always been a very slow reader. I also have ADHD too, so that might be why.

Same with me. I "hear" my thoughts, it's a voice and not a voice at the same time. "Sounds" sort of like a monotone and quite low version of my voice.
So, I am not with the OP in this. While my thoughts often include pictures and umm...video, I do not 'think in pictures'. It's funny how my thoughts are so verbal yet I am absolutely horrible at actually speaking those things out in a coherent way.

I believe most people do hear such a voice when thinking, reading. I could be wrong, though.

The article states that they think people with ADHD also have no inner speech. There's a test on the page to see how if you do. I failed miserably, as did my dyslexic, ADHD hubby.

No. I have a bad habit of reading aloud. I also rarely picture what characters look like, even if there are physical descriptions in the text.

Could you post a link? I'm curious to see how I do on it.

I'm quite aware that I have inner speech, but it doesn't seem to help me any.

A similar thing, but the opposite - I can't imagine a character's voice when reading. The scenes happen but the characters don't really have voices, expect for that automatic 'inner voice'. If I put effort into it I can imagine someone's voice when reading something, but only if it's a real person whose speaking voice I remember.

I think everyone has some kind of running commentary that remarks dryly on your choice of clothes, shoes or lack thereof when you are walking around, I have always had this inner voice and I am not ashamed to admit it.

It is surprising though how many NTs will steadfastly refuse to acknowledge it though, how do they organise their thoughts?

Are thoughts words, or are words thoughts?

I hear a voice, it's either a voice I give my character's, my own or a if the book has been made into a film/TV show I will hear that character's voice. I was reading Stargate Atlantis and had a whole heap of voices of the actors reading their parts in my head.

I hear more than I see. I do see images but they're not that clear and they don't always pop up.

I hear my own voice, like I am reading out loud inside of my head. And I use different voices for different characters, too. Just like I do when reading aloud for my daughter.

I hear the words as if they're spoken. I usually translate the words into images and can typically do so fairly quickly (I can read fast, although not super fast). When characters speak I hear them speaking in their own voices (or rather, how I imagine them).

I have some inner speech, but very little and I don't think I ever have heard character voices as I read. I most definitely have dreams that are both visual and vocal, though.

I do think ADHDers can have an inner voice, developed to various degrees. If Barkley's theories about the development of executive functions are true, it's certainly possible for people with ADHD or autism to develop visualization thoroughly and little or no inner voice or vice versa. Given that each is a spectrum with different possible symptoms and severity, the possibilities are pretty endless.

Oh, and to add to my post above - I have very little actual inner voice or verbal working memory.
