I found this interesting test on different types of empathy: Interpersonal Reactivity Index

The test is in a Word document and you have to score it yourself: Link to test

People diagnosed AS tend to score lower on Perspective Taking (cognitive empathy) than NT's. But, they score the same on Empathic Concern and higher on Personal Distress (experiencing distress in response to distress in others).

This matches my experience of empathy - being rubbish at seeing things from other people's point of view, but caring about other people and sometimes being overwhelmed.

Here are my scores if anyone wants to compare:

Fantasy: 15 (average scores: 15.73 for men; 18.75 for women)
Perspective Taking: 2 (average scores: 16.78 for men; 17.96 for women)
Empathic Concern : 20 (average scores: 19.04 for men; 21.67 for women)
Personal Distress: 20 (average scores: 9.46 for men; 12.28 for women)

PT = perspective-taking scale = 0
FS = fantasy scale = 8
EC = empathic concern scale = 14
PD = personal distress scale = 19

Interesting that we're both higher than average in PD.

Fantasy: 26 (average scores: 15.73 for men; 18.75 for women)
Perspective Taking: 16 (average scores: 16.78 for men; 17.96 for women)
Empathic Concern : 27 (average scores: 19.04 for men; 21.67 for women)
Personal Distress: 13 (average scores: 9.46 for men; 12.28 for women)

I conform to the trend for those with AS but only by very slight margins. (I am female.)

Fantasy: 13 (I get into things, I just can't identify with the characters or such)
PT: 13 (I know that other people have different thoughts, I'm just bad at reading what they are)
EC: 26 (Lost two points on "I'm often touched by things I see")
PD: 17 (This one was most all over the board)

So, lower on fantasy, and perspective taking, but higher on empathetic concern and personal distress.
For perspective taking, I do try to look at both sides of an argument, and do try to figure out what other people are thinking, I will just have no idea how to do so unless I'm really really close to the person (and even not then if I'm upset).

Here are my scores if anyone wants to compare:

Fantasy: 21 (average scores: 15.73 for men; 18.75 for women)
Perspective Taking: 7 (average scores: 16.78 for men; 17.96 for women)
Empathic Concern : 22 (average scores: 19.04 for men; 21.67 for women)
Personal Distress: 18 (average scores: 9.46 for men; 12.28 for women)

I scored higher than average on PD and FS, about the same on EC and lower on PT. Wow! PT is a lot lower than my other scores.

I too know that other have different thoughts, I just don't spend time trying to understand their point of view in an argument.

I have always had problems with empathy (although I only realized this in my mid-20s when someone pointed it out). Apparently all types of empathy are below average for me:

Fantasy: 8
Perspective Taking: 0
Empathic Concern : 4
Personal Distress: 9

Perspective Taking: 9 (I try really hard, but I suck at it)
Fantasy: 3 (I have no idea why I have very little social fantasy)
Empathic Concern: 19
Personal Distress: 7 (Funny that I score lower than most people on Personal Distress....maybe I didn't understand the questions properly? I don't tend to freak out in "real"....not the right word, but I can't think of a different one.... emergencies because my emotions shut down.)

Perspective-taking: 12
Fantasy: 3
Empathic concern: 18
Personal distress: 13

I found the "personal distress" questions rather confusing because I tend to get very distressed in emotionally "dangerous" situations but not distressed in physically dangerous ones.

I think I may translate this to a spreadsheet. Manual scoring is painful

It conforms, and I'm really surprised! I always considered myself to be really empathic, but I suck at perspective taking!

Here we go:

Perspective Taking: 4
Fantasy: 24
Empathic Concern: 19
Personal Distress: 16

I guess I conform to AS trends.

I didn't have to make a spreadsheet, at least.

Oh yeah, same - although I realized I was bad at perspective taking a few months ago.

There's no calculator for this? How dare they make me write things down and do math in my head.
