Why is it your obsession/field of study?
If you could share the main point of why it interests you. What is the most important aspect of your obsession? Either your prized possession from it or your favorite thing about it, or what you want people to understand the most about it.
What I mean is, don't just say sheep or billy idol. I'd like to know what it is about sheep or billy idol if that's alright.

I'm currently studying graphic design, but it's not exactly my obsession. I just seem to have a knack at it. But my main interest is gliders & things that fly.
A loot of people ask me: "Why don't you become an airline pilot, or military air force pilot?". But I was never good with stress, especially if I'm going to be responsible for 400 - 500 lives. And I'm not much of a jet jock either..
Billy Idol, because he has such great, happy upbeat music and he saved my life from depression and harming myself! I stopped because I saw he went through a lot with drugs, and alcohol, and even a motorcycle accident, and he survived it all and stopped abusing drugs! He did more drugs than anything else, but he stopped for his children and hopefully his devoted fans, and I stopped hurting myself and being depressed because of him! He is my inspiration and taught me to be strong! And IMO he is the hottest man I`ve ever seen, even now at 55 almost 56! And his CD and CD cover are my most prized possessions I don`t go anywhere without!

MUSIC. All of it.
Pop, rock, classic rock, 80's synth pop and metal, the Beatles, Elvis, classical, baroque, romantic, French Impressionism, medieval music, Renaissance, modernism, minimalism, serialism, postmodernism...
Music theory, Music literature, Music history,
Playing music, learning new musical instruments, music composition, orchestration, arranging...
Playing keyboards/synthesizers in a rock band, playing keyboards/synthesizers in church praise and worship band...
Playing clarinet every chance I get...
Teaching piano lessons, teaching composition/theory/songwriting/improvising whenever someone is interested...
And convincing people to share my obsession with music.
Why? Well, it was the first thing I found in school that I was actually good at and better than everyone else at. It was really the only thing I could really compete in and at least place, if not actually win.
From that point, it just became a way of life. Occasionally I even get paid! lol I found something that worked and went with it. What happened, I think, is I got pushed around so much in school, and when I wasn't getting pushed around I was getting ignored. When it came to music, it was all I was ever actually good at. So when it's something you know you can't get the crap kicked out of you over, ya tend to put everything you have into it. Sure, there were older, bigger bullies in band, too. But that was MY territory and I had no qualms with putting a hard rubber mallet through your forehead.

Calendars and dates. I can calculate the day of the week for any given date in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. I enjoy the mathematical aspect as I have a very mathematical brain. I also like exploring the various relationships within the calendars. I'm currently working on writing up everything that I know on the mathematics of the Julian and Gregorian calendars, along with a method for calculating the day of the week. Since I also have an interest in Judaism, I've also explored the relationships within the Jewish calendar.

My main interest right now is computer programming. The reason is that the idea I can write specific words in a window, and then a computer does what I tell it is magical. Even a simple "Hello World" program is amazing to watch work. As a nice bonus, I follow tech quite closely and coders are the only people in the workforce today that can virtually write their own ticket. Work wherever they want, and name their price for it. That freedom is very appealing to me.
What I like to study right now is Chemistry specifically I guess biochemistry, chemistry, and organic chemistry, probably some other chemistry's in their I haven't noticed. I don't really know why, I guess I like it. I feel most comfortable when I'm studying this, when I study other stuff I don't feel as comfortable. and it depends on what in chemistry I am study. If I study certain terminology then I'm comfortable doing it but some other terminology i'm not comfortable with. Guess it depends on the time of study and what whatever im in. Mood.
Thank you all very much for posting. I loved reading these. Things like this. Where people have found something that makes them happy and excited. Don't you?
I actually don't know how I would answer this question, which I guess is why I asked it.

Career-wise, it's mostly any topic under the heading of Electrical Engineering.
Personally, it's Baking/Cooking, History, Science-Fiction, and Skepticism.

Do you know why? What is it about these subjects? Especially curious about skepticism.

I would say music and words have been my main interest since a young child. I have, since a child, become attached to specific songs/bands, and played them over and over, to a point I must know thousands of lyrics by heart. I see the meaning in lyrics and music somehow enables me to experience a world that I cannot experience without it, and has also been a means of expression for me, when I could not express my emotions in words.
Other passing interests recently have included Harry Potter (4 years), Doctor Who (2 years), Secondlife (2 years) and Aspergers (5 years and counting)
With Harry Potter and Doctor Who, they allowed me to escape into another world, and absorb myself into those worlds, and with the former, gave me a means to interract with others online, who shared that common interest. I remember once roleplaying with someone for 12 hours solidly.
Secondlife, not sure how to explain really, but it is a creative outlet as well as being a means to explore other environments at times I cannot do so in real life. It was also an outlet for my obsessive collecting issues, as for a fraction of the rl cost, I could amass vast swathes of clothing and items. It gave me immense pleasure to submerge myself in that world, and to listen to live music there for free.
Aspergers is self explanatory. I have long had interest in psychology, in particular disorders of various kinds, and criminal psychology. I have read many, many books and pieces and sites on AS and autism.

Electrical engineering gives me a reason to do things in a lab that my family would be afraid of if I did them in the basement.
Baking/Cooking gives me an outlet for my creativity, and gives other people a chance to appreciate something that I've done for them.
History is like a giant puzzle - Did you know that paper was not invented until long after the New Testament was written?
Science-Fiction lets my imagination soar far away from this awful planet-bound existence (I'd rather be a starship captain).
Skepticism means that I won't get fooled again, even though it also means that I miss out on a lot of romanticism and other forms of relationships.

Mathematics to me , is a different universe that describes the universe so perfectly in logic. Proving that something is logical is venturing towards the truth , and logic is a creation of the human mind - it does have it fallacies but mathematics has rules for such a chaotic world. Nothing can be proved but with mathematics it seems so convincing in it's arguments depending on the idea which is bounded by creativity in creating new patterns , relationships and pictures , that add more to the mathematical universe where I can escape to with only a pen and paper.
Mathematics is an aesthetic language of perfection , it is a voyage toward new routes and areas , it is a voyage to the truth.
Mathematics is a religion to me.
Social science. I am intimately interested in the constructs of people and why they make them. I spend my time modelling their processes using mathematical and statistical methods. I want to see what makes us tick; I desire to comprehend what is it that made myself so different and, in that process, be able to identify why the world has turned out the way it has. I feel, through the endless labyrinth, that I will know what it means to be human.
Non-academically, atlases are my favourite. I love memorising capitals, borders, major cities, lakes, mountains, and other geographical markers. Dictionaries and encyclopedias are a close second.
Cars. I remember when I bought my first one at 16, the feeling of absolute freedom. If I spent all the money I've got on gas, I could be on the other side of the continent in a week. That's a really good feeling, even if I have no clue what I'd do when I got there. And I'm quite good at driving as well. I used to go out in the middle of the night and spend hours driving all the wonderful hilly windy roads around the edges of LA, slowly getting faster and faster as my confidence grew. I also spent ten of the twleve years I've been working as a pizza driver, and often had a lot of fun with it when the roads were clear.
I read each issue of all the major car magazines up to a dozen times before I get the next month's issue. And even then I hang on to them and sometimes pick out a stack of old issues I haven't read in a few years, just because I enjoy being reminded of how far (or sometimes, how not-so-far) the auto world has come. I could probably name every make and model sold in this country, along with each model's powertrain options.
I'm the luckiest bastard in the world. I do durability testing of prototype cars. Which basically means driving them around LA for ten to twelve hours a night (I spend about half of that time on the very same roads I used to drive for fun), and waiting to see what goes wrong. The job was surprisingly easy to get, All I needed was to have a clean driving record and to show a very basic level of mechanical knowledge. The interview was also shockingly easy, all we did was BS about cars and driving: the one topic where I can hold up my end of the conversation.
Now, I've actually driven cars that those magazines are still speculating about the existence of. I used to read them to find out the expert's opinions, now I read them to see if those opinions agree with mine. It's fantastic, even if the pay is crap (tons of overtime helps). I get to spend the majority of my day out on my own, no need to stress about awkward interactions, doing what I love. And what's more, I can finally tell people what I do for a living and not worry that they'll look down on me. Hell, there are people that make much better money than me who are positively envious of my job.
Anyway, yeah, I get to live my obsession and still be productive. It's pretty great.
