After reading the responses in the thread Do You Hear An Inner Voice When You Read? I was really surprised at the results. So many of you said you did, which I don't, for the most part.

My next question is, How do you spell words? What is your thought process on that? I see the word typed out in my head, like it is on this screen. Always have. Do you have an inner voice for that? Or do you see the word like I do? Also, are you a good speller or is it a struggle for you?

This is such an interesting subject to me. I'm really eager to hear your answers!

I see the word in my head most of the time. Most of the time I am a good speller but not all the time. Sometimes I am able to pick out words in sentences that have the wrong spelling. It just looks wrong. I have thoughts all the time when spelling but I don't know if its called an "inner voice" or not. I don't hear it through my ears. Its just silent thoughts but I know what the thoughts are saying. There are times though where I do struggle spelling and can't figure out simple things while other times I am amazing.

It really depends on the word. Sometimes I just spell it without even thinking, usually getting it right. Other times, I'm way off.

I see the word or rather sense it almost like I'm in an imaginary dark space with the letters carved in big rock totems in the dark and I can sense their shape and dimly see it also? Also my mind shifts from one letter to the next, it's not all spelled out already statically, like it does when I'm playing piano and know the next note by heart and only think of the note I'm playing now and don't worry about the next til it's "here."

If I'm typing or writing, I type without thinking of individual letters, often see that it looks wrong, and keep trying to correct it until it looks right to me. I don't actually know how to spell well, but I've read enough that I'm good at identifying when something is wrong.

If I'm having to spell something without writing it down, you'll see that I am actually fingerspelling as I spell it.

I tend to convert thoughts to words as I go to communicate them, but I don't see the words nor really hear the separate sounds that a word makes in order to work on spelling it. I tend to either remember words I've written very often, or if its a word that isn't in that class, I edit after the fact. Fingerspelling allows me to do some amount of the editing after the fact, though my spelling will still be much poorer than if I were typing.

Good spelling usually comes naturally and organically for me. If I stopped to think about it, I'd end up second-guessing myself.

I cannot imagine reading without an inner voice, since all the words are made up of alphabetic characters that represent phonetic sounds.

I am a good speller, and even if I don't know how to spell a word, I still notice if it looks wrong or not, and I loathe leaving posts with spelling mistakes in, although probably some words are mis-spelled, but everybody makes mistakes.

I can't say if I see the word in my head before spelling it or not. Usually when I'm typing, I have an inner voice in my head as I type, but I don't see the words in my head. I don't think I can do that at the same time as typing. I think I can see the word in my head if I'm trying to spell a really hard word.

With counting, I don't see numbers in my head as I count, because I'm so bad at maths that my mind filters out numbers - I don't think it likes numbers  . But when I'm counting I always use my fingers, if not I have to try to use the few timetables that I know. But I'm not normally working a maths problem out, so I can't say much on that either.

If I am spelling long words (ie. antidisestablishmentarianism) I see the word in my head and say the letters as I look at the word. I can also "hear" my voice mentally (not audio, but I can sense my voice as was explained in the other thread) as I look at the word if I am spelling it mentally (when I want to), but I ALWAYS see the word. Because I am a visual thinker, I can't NOT see the word.

Edit: Or sometimes, I see the picture of the thing, like dog. I know how to spell dog instinctively (I don't have to picture the word itself in order to spell it). But as I say the letters D-O-G, I usually see the letters themselves as I say them, along with the picture of a dog. Kind of similar to those flash cards a 5 year old might use, but the letters sort of appear as I say them, rather than me reading them off of my mental picture. I don't know...kind of difficult to explain....

Hmm, I don't see words typed out in my head. If I have to spell something without writing it down, I have a hard time even with my own name... I'm better at numbers, though.

When I write or type I know what letter follows what, but can't see the whole word before I move to the next. I can imagine it in my head, but it takes time, and I only have a fragile image, which is easily lost as my focus drifts away. When I read I don't recognize the individual letters, after scanning through them quickly I can "see" the meaning of the pattern directly.

Somewhere I came across an example where in a text the first and the last letters of the words were kept in place while all the other letters were mixed up still the text was readable, meaning the order of the letters in a word isn't much important as long as the first and the last remains in its place.

I am similar to OJani, I have to just write and hope for the best (usually it goes well).

With longer words that I can't just work out, I work it out by sounding it out, or using a mnemonic. I don't "see" the word though.

I just read the words, maybe I don't though and just think I do, exactly the same way some people do not know some people have a voice in their head.

When I read stories, I see th pictures of what the writer is conveying, such as in David Eddings Pawn of Prophecy if a castle was described I would build it in my mind to almost epic proportions of realism, same with everything I read and have never been able to do differently.

I am a very visual person, though when I come to draw artwork I cannot even make a straight line, the image in my head evaporates like the hottie at the bar when you tell her you're broke :p

I am a terrible speller if I'm trying to spell out loud (like with a spelling bee), but quite a good speller if I'm writing or typing. This occasionally caused me problems in school, but luckily that's in the past. I have no idea why it's different writing vs speaking, but it really is.

For me it's pretty automatic for most words, but difficult words I listen to as I say it slowly and with correct diction in my mind to identify the sounds then write the letters for those sounds/rules using the concept if you can say it correctly you can spell it correctly. It sounds the same to me as how I hear when reading.
