How I deal with it:

* avoid places I know will be noisy

* monitor how I'm feeling and go find someplace quiet if I'm overloaded

* wear a jacket with a hood, so I can use the hood to block out noise

* plug my ears and hum to myself to block out sound

That's pretty much what I've found works.

how do you deal with it when you have no choice but to have to deal with it and want to do something like math, reading or painting?

Earplugs. I take them with me anytime there might be a risk of being in loud surroundings. Also, you can get flesh colored sets that people will not notice unless they're looking for them.

and if it's too loud for the plugs to block? (may times it is. i will notice very faint sounds. i consider my 25 db pc fans to be fairly noisy. not real noisy though.)

In that case you might want to look into noise cancelling headphones as well. They can offer the same levels as the best earplugs, and they fit over your ears to allow you to use both if you need them. If you use the two in conjunction, you can get noise reduction in excess of 60dB(which would reduce a jackhammer to the level of a quiet conversation.)

I leave, or I use earplugs, or I meltdown (not something I want to do, but if I cannot avoid it, it sometimes happens.)

I use earplugs too! Or else I get irritable and frustrated!

Block it out if I can, otherwise I just suck it up and deal with it.

I just deal with it. I guess I'm not that sensitive to sound, but sometimes it can slow down my thought process to a crawl.

I use earplugs. However... I can still hear people whisper with them on, not to mention the things I am trying to block out. (Is this supposed to happen?)

Does anybody know of a particularly good brand of earplugs, or something better than earplugs?

I have very bad noise sensitivity, and I'm currently receiving treatment for it (occupational therapy.)

But for the short term, I use earplugs.
Sometimes they can be annoying to always use, but they're usually extremely helpful. I'm also happy that I'm female and have long hair so most people don't ever notice that I'm wearing them.

When I wear my noise cancelling headphones with earplugs, I swear things seem louder, like it should be 60db but it seems like 15db. I could just be hearing white noise but I don't know. It doesn't deaden the sound more. I use gun shooting headphones. Does that make a difference?
