do you understand what people are saying to you? i once asked someone, "do you understand what the cats are saying when they talk?" so, do you understand what those strange creatures, humans, are saying when THEY talk?
i have a pretty bad problem with instructions/directions, and sometimes even if it's a simple question, or statement, i don't understand, but that doesn't happen much. the words just don't make sense and swim around in my head.

I have a problem with some people more than others. Theres this one guy at work and I honestly dont understand a word he says though Im starting to think its more his problem than mine because I understand most people like 80% of the time. I have the most problem with what I would say are very sociable definitely not autistic people ( I say this because my mum and sister are two of that kind of people and they scored 3 and 6 on the AQ test and I got 37) Someone will often make a comment about something and I hear it as the opposite of what they were say maybe it is the intonation in their voice I misunderstand or just that my mind is on something else and I assume the comment relates to whats in my head.
Why ever this happens yes it happens to me too.

I have various neurological brain issues when it comes to my hearing and auditory input. Things have improved a little with 'white noise' hearing aids but I still find I can't understand hardly anything that the other person has said! It's like if someone said:

Hey look over there, there is a red car in the car park!

I would probably hear:

'ok o-er there there car park!'

I miss various sounds and even entire words out!

Communication conundrums topic

Most of what I hear! And a lot of emails, too! The writer expects me to read between the lines, where there are NO WORDS AT ALL! I get panicky about this, and many lose patience trying to re-explain.

Hard for me to distinguish my own-one-syllable consonant-bookended name from other names in the same category, including "Mom" or "Dad" when my sister calls them.

Pretty muchthe same issue as described above in the "carpark" example.

That and can't follow verbal instruction. Goes too fast to process cause I process it by creating pictures in my head for every single phrase.

YES all of the above, especially

--verbal directions
--interpreting inflextion/ tone of voice
--trying to connect what someone is saying to what I am thinking makes me more confused
--reading between the lines! AGH!! ! Why is clarity and bluntness a bad thing?

Situations where I have trouble understanding:

* with a lot of background noise

* when the person pronounces things strangely - people with accents or speech impediments are a bit harder for me to understand than for most people

* if they're saying a long sequence of things, such as when I ask for directions (I tend to just listen for the first step they mention, do that, and find a new person to ask)

* if they're verbally describing a motor movement - I need to be walked through the movement very slowly

* if they're leaving me to fill in the blanks, like 'you know what I mean'

Apart from those situations, my verbal comprehension is generally in the gifted range of ability. I'm a very verbal person. I also have even better reading comprehension than verbal comprehension.

I have problems (significantly more than normal I think) understanding people when they have accents I'm not used to, or when there's background noise.

I am quite good with theory of the mind. But sometimes I don't always understand what people are asking me, but it depends if they are asking me clearly. Sometimes NTs can be unclear when they are asking something.

Background noise tends to be a killer, especially unexpected. Constant background noise is a lot easier. Instructions and directions I can understand...I just can't memorise them easily. It's usually a lot easier to simply show me what I need to do. Also, I can sometimes space out and completely miss a couple of sentences, especially if something the person said to me started me on a train of thought.

Not hearing what somebody is saying when there's a sudden background noise is common is everybody. Oftem when I'm talking to somebody and then there's a sudden background noise heard, the person I'm speaking to never hears the word I said as the background noise happened.

For me its like if you were to turn on 6 different radios and to put them on 6 different AM stations and play them at the same time. Like someone might be saying "Hey, so did you (random noise) then, right?". Its like I heard them, but all the words got jumbled together or something and a good portion of their sentence was not processed in my head. Its hard to explain.
