For me, that would have to be a tie between Halo Reach, Mass Effect, and Mass Effect 2.

Final Fantasy II for the Super Nintendo (later rereleased as Final Fantasy IV). The game was incredible. The story, the challenge, the gameplay... there will never be another game like it, that captivates me that way it did. I almost cried when I beat it because I knew the great adventure was over and I'd be hard-pressed to find another as good.

There certainly won't be another Final Fantasy game like it. The new ones are CRAP and should be ashamed to carry the name. FF 13 gets zero stars out of four.

I am particularly smitten with the Dragon Quest series. They're great for ASDers because of the repetitive level-grinding. It's an old-school series that stays true to its roots, and is traditionally gameplay-based instead of story-based. But still... no DQ game is as well-done as FF4.

There are great action games too, but they're generally too short for my tastes. I almost completely don't play newer games so I can't offer my opinions there. Any of the Zelda games top the list as well.

Overrated games: Chrono Trigger, any FF past 5 (especially 7, but with the exception of 9), and about ninety percent of games made past around the year 2000 or so.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2

The second got a very rare perfect 10/10 score from Gamespot and IGN.

I would say probably Super Mario World (Super Nintendo) and Mario 3 (NES). These games were challenging, and yet had many secrets, cheats, and glitches that nobody felt guilty abusing to get around the challenges. Good for serious and casual gamers.

Best serious games for me would be Monster Hunter (PSP) or Demon's Souls (PS3).

metal gear solid .. gameplay and cinematic experience, seamless. MGS2 is a very honorable mention -- I almost beat it on extreme (Every boss I had to fight about 70 times at least before defeating, no doubt I hated each boss for particular reasons.
Deus Ex. the options, the environment with such fitting music, and philosophy. must talk to all of the characters, ESPECIALLY the hidden characters in Morgan Everett's home. never even used one killswitch, though.
counter-strike and smash brothers and smash brothers melee was even tighter,, quicker, most precise in ANY gameplay (multiple times, like more than 6, me and my bother would hit each other at the exact same time, and simply bounce off).

majora's mask, ocarina of time -- only games of that type I found very solid in story as in adventure
advance wars (I never liked a strategy or turn based game in my life before it)
donkey kong land for gameboy is #1 for best repetitive music
random, arcadey yet still very tight game -- blitz 2000.

In reality, the best game ever is probably tetris. but not my absolute favorite.

the best games are those that if you only played through half of it -- it still would suffice for a remembrance of a good game. almost all of the above apply.

Even though I never played pre-VII FF's I couldn't agree more, I bought FFXIII recently because I remember falling in love with FFIX when I was a kid and this new game is just plain dumb, everything from gameplay, upgrade system, characters and plot seems ridiculous. My girlfriend is also an avid FF fan and she hates it too.

That said, my favorite solo games would be: Super Mario Galaxy (only the first one, I sold my Wii before getting #2), FFIX, Ocarina of Time (along with every Zelda game but this one was ground breaking), Conker's Bad Fur Day, Assassin's Creed, Portal, Arkham Asylum and my all-time favorite Splinter Cell.

Multiplayers: Halo, Pro Evolution Soccer, Mario Kart, Fight Night, Goldeneye come to mind, but my favorite is and always will be Super Smash Bros.

I can narrow the list down, but I can't choose a favorite.

RPG:
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (I haven't played it recently because I lost my PSP charger, but I just found it and am really excited to have it back :D )
Mother 3 (which has never officially been released in the US)
Xenogears (I have actually only played it for a couple hours but it at least has a great start and an awesome premise)

Rhythm:
Rock Band 2/3
The Beatles: Rock Band

Platformer:
Super Mario Sunshine
Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey

..and I don't feel like thinking of anymore right now, but I'll edit this post later.

TES3 Morrowind. I logged over a thousand hours playing that game, and it's also the game that stimulated my interest in game modding in general. It's also a hell of a lot easier to mod than Oblivion or the Bethesda-published Fallout games because 99% of the dialog is just plain text (no voice acting or lip syncing)

Bioshock. But the main reason I liked it was because I like biology and I love looking at the detail that went into that game.

But I think the most detailed game is actually Nethack, despite all of its graphics consisting of text on the screen.

God, there's so, so, so, so, so many!

It's a toss between the Pokemon games, Rock Band games, Mass Effect 2 and The Elder Scrolls games.

Gosh emm it's been like a year since I last touched a computer game!

But I used to play alot when I was younger. My favorite games are Captain Claw and Doom 2.. both from the 90s oldies but goodies.

Ignoring Daryl_Blonder's factually incorrect post, my choice has to be Final Fantasy VIII. 8)
