Hello,
I'm the mother of 7 children, and my youngest (dd is 12) was just officially diagnosed with Aspergers. She is in middle school, and started having academic problems at the beginning of last year. She's always been unique, and has sometimes been a challenge to discipline at home, but her behaviours seemed to cause problems at school for the first time in the last few months of the year. We suspect that bullying increased considerably at that time. We've been having a great summer, despite all the appointments, and I wish it didn't have to end in a few weeks. I'll let you know how navigating the school system, paper in hand, goes. :P Some of my other children have various "special features" of AS, ADHD and OCD, and so do my dh and I, and I consider us more awesome than average. J.

Hi Ilka,
How nice to know there's another mother with a tween aspie. I'm sure we'll learn a lot from you!

Hiya,

I am Paul 39/UK

Welcome to the wrongplanet, which sounds wierd cause I just joined myself in the last hour or so.

I was diagnosed a few months back and my son is 9, he was diagnosed ADHD only at about 5 yrs old.

I think both his mother and I (seperated now) think the same that my doctor is right and he could be aspie too
but his doctor is being a bit of an ..well..we deal with it

Actually, it seems maybe ADD/ADHD/Aspergers have lots in common anyway

I hope your daughter doesn't have so much bullying, I know I did in school and it's started sometimes with my son and we are at a loss sometimes what to do. Obviously there is so much more support now than the 70's - 80's but still not enough.

Anyway, it's 2am here and as mush as I want to go through this forum right now, I must be sensible (rather than impulsive as normal) and get to bed as I am working, up in 5 and a half hours.

Best wishes to your ...well... big family (it must be hectic)

Take Care
Paul.

Hi Paul. You are right. ADHD is one of the clinic disorders usually linked to the differential diagnosis of AS. My Aspie daughter was also diagnosed with ADHD when she was about 8 (before she was diagnosed with AS). The problem is attention deficit is characteristic in people witn AS, but the reasons are different, so ADHD meds usually do not work on people with AS. The only thing Concerta did for my kid was sedate her, increase her anxiety problems, and worsen her sleeping problems. If you think the diagnosis is incorrect, you should take him with someone else. I always recommend take your kid to a clinic specialized in autism to get him tested. Good luck!
