Hi, following from my "Advice for an official diagnosis" I also need advice on claiming disability, I have applied before and was turned down, I've applied again and given my doctor and my support worker as references but I don't have an official diagnosis as the NHS told me they won't fund it. So anyway I've explained that I have trouble being around other people and don't feel I can do a job, that I'm on jobseekers but really need DLA because I can't do the jobs the jobcentre expects me to do, that I can't pull myself away from interests and am uncomfortable and drained around others. Despite explaining this I'm expecting to be turned down again so I'm just wondering if anyone has experience in this area and has advice to help my application. Many thanks to anyone who can help and sorry for a slightly too large paragraph.

Weird they turned you down for the official diagnosis. I was diagnosed on the NHS on the 2nd June just over 2 months ago, but I'm in South Yorkshire That was by a leading professional he's listed on the National Autistic Society's website Dr. Eric Dale, maybe try emailing him for advice? I think it's on his website or message me and I'll give it to you, I have it somewhere. It was a six month waiting list. I think it's not to do with funding but not many NHS professionals diagnosing it. Don't think you can get the disability living allowance with out the official diagnosis. Try and get as much written proof as possible like from a councilor. I'm now getting post-diagnosis help, I get free bus travel in my county which is handy when you're on job seekers, apply for that too!, social training in a few months also a nurse is coming to visit me soon to help find out what or if I'm entitled to any allowances. It might be to do with where you live on what help is available which is stupid.

Thanks, I will look on his website and email for advice. It is because of where I live they said no NHS funding in this area and it's annoying because my doctor and support worker and the college learners support department all know as well as many others and it's really obvious yet no one will give me an official diagnosis

The disability living allowance isn't for people who can't work. To claim DLA you'd have to show that you have a physical or mental disability that is so severe that you have trouble caring for yourself.

If you think your disability prevents you from working, but you can otherwise take care of yourself day to day, you might look instead at the employment and support allowance.

Part of the application process involves work and medical assessments, the report of which is sent to the department of work and pensions.

Yes. DLA is extra money for mobility or care needs. ESA is what you need to be on if you are unable to work.

Best place for help with applying for DLA is http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/

You have to pay for a subscription, but it is completely worth it to get access to their guides. They helped me hugely last year, without them I wouldn't have been able to survive. They've helped huge numbers of people, and the Daily Mail hates them which should tell you quite a lot.

Oh whoops, thanks, yes this is exactly the advice I needed, I find it really hard to sort this kind of thing out for myself for some reason. Finances and benefits etc hurt my mind I just can't focus on it very well
