I have difficulty a lot of time expressing my thoughts into words....but when I am really angry or upset it becomes near impossible. The most I can get out is one word and it likely won't make any sense at all.
Anyone else find they are near unable to talk when upset? I almost become non functional for a time...but I guess this might be sort of considered a melt down or shut down (more likely shut down)

actually when I am angry...I have the opposite problem.

I remember when I was mad at my dad for mistreating my mom while she was very ill.
While I was still fuming.
A mouse got in the house...ran through a bunch of cleaner on the floor and kinda got sick and drunk on it and was staggering around covered in carpet cleaner
Well my dad and my brother were both getting grossed out by it...my mom came in and scooped up the mouse by its tail and tosed it outside.
Well I was mad at my dad for how he treated mom a few days before, but I said..."if there was a man eating lion in this house...he would starve to death."

I am actually quite expressive when mad.

However what you seem to be describing is a shut down.
The emotion may be so powerful for you that it overwhelms your ability to comunicate.
I suggest that you find a different way to comunicate your anger...like drawing or writing...get it out visually instead of verbally.

Anger is one emotion that doesn't usually hinder my speech. When I'm angry, I don't know how to shut up.

Reading this I wonder if you are experiencing the freeze part of "Flight, Fight, or Freeze" Like a rabbit in headlights kind of reaction.

We have 3 levels to our brain, the high functioning logical part that makes us human, the animal part which makes controls needs such as food, feeling sleepy etc and the lowest functioning part which is all about survival

When we become very angry and adrenalin is produced the levels of our brain begin to shut down, you can't reason with someone who is in a rage because of this reason, they are ready to fight and see everything as a threat and attack, so therefore the logical part of the brain that controls speech has limited functionality

When you get really upset you can totally freeze, when we are out of options and in danger we still have a "play dead" function.

I have read evidence to suggest that these responses can kick in quicker for an someone with Autism than an NT, but I can't remember the reasoning behind it

I can say for sure I experience this too.

This is the reason that I tend to just keep my thoughts to myself, when I am angry (although I use my husband or parents as a sounding board afterwards). I've spoken about this in other posts, so I don't want to go into it much, but I did this for 21 years with my in-laws. Then I had a total blowout at them last year and tried to tell them my true feelings. I couldn't get my words out properly, missed a lot of what I had been thinking and went off at tangents. However, I was able to write it down very well and had intended sending my mother-in-law a letter, but never did. Writing helped me to get my thoughts in order.

Yes, yes, I'm the same way. Actually, I experienced it in its worst form with my ex gf. She was the worst kind of a one-person word-artillery against me. I tried to communicate to her my problems in written form, but usually she neglected it too.

I hate being angry or upset because my usual weakness in speaking easily becomes much more severe in a matter of moments and I'm literally unable to translate my thoughts into words. Particularly annoying when I'm supposed to say something meaningful in my defense but I can't. I can speak but what I speak is not what I mean, if it makes sense.

I am the opposite. When I'm angry, I sound like a mouthy oik from London. I shout and swear, but sometimes so many words want to come out that they all can't at once, so I sometimes go into a manic outburst, screaming and swearing and being really, really sarcastic about whatever's got me angry.

This is a major problem I have. When I get angry enough I can't speak clearly. Because of that I make a significant effort to remain as calm as possible most of the time.

Verbalizing thoughts becomes more difficult when I'm angry, but being angry usually causes me to lose my shyness.

When angry enough I have no control of what I'm saying, but will speak more.

When upset enough, I don't just have it be difficult to translate thoughts to words, but I actually will go mute. If I try to speak about things entirely unrelated and know what I want to say, no words will come out.

I don't hesitate to belt out my opinion when I'm angry. Normally I don't speak more than 30 words a day, but anger brings out my vast vocabulary. I often leave the people I'm angry with stumped, confused, and defeated.

I get this bad and I can't say much and what comes out is broken, not well thought out, sometimes makes no sense , this doesn't go over well with my gf, she needs and demands to hear me tell her whats wrong for some reason and it gets worse the more she trys to pry words from me, to the point where I want to run or explode and I don't like it.

Most people just leave me alone so I don't have to talk until I'm ready, thankfully.

I usually have fair clarity of thought when my heart is racing( as in anger).
It's when I feel calmer that my thinking is a bit less clear. :)
