What are your favourite storylines from games? The kind that keep you pondering for ages afterwards, or make you want to play again to spot all the clues/ideas you missed?

The main ones for me are Oblivion, Heavy Rain and the Legend of Zelda stories. But the one that really has me vexed is Legacy of Kain. I’ve played through Blood Omen, Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2 and Defiance, and I, er, still don't get it.

I understand bits here and there, but my brain just isn't big enough to piece it all together, :P . Still, I wouldn't have it any other way - I'd rather dwell on how Kain finally became (spoiler alert) purified, then be sitting about waiting forever for the sixth LOK.

I'm not in it for the cinematics, but it's a good thing to add on.

all the starcraft storylines. Kerrigan is just awesome.

FFX and X2 i enjoyed...and some of the later FF games too (like 13 and 14)

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

that's all i can think of. i may add more later when my brain is more awake.

I've not finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution yet but it's looking to be one of the best game stories I've experienced for a while. I've always liked cyberpunk settings in games, it's such a difference from all the cliché fantasy and science fiction with space marines settings. The last game I played with such a setting was the original Deus Ex, and the underrated game Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis.

I also found the story in Heavy Rain to be engaging, though it was flawed in some areas. A lot of Madison's story was just silly, for example. The first half hour you spend with her is all a pointless dream with her being chased around in her underwear. Later on she has to escape from a sadistic murderer, which also has little to do with the overall story and feels like the contrivance for the sake of gameplay it is.

I Haven't played Deus Ex HR yet, but the original Deus ex was one of the deepest and most thought provoking games I have ever played.

I thought exactly the same :) Though I think the 'Doctor' comes to her book signings, in one of the endings? I don't know, I'll have to play again to find out. Pretty sure you hear his voice, and Madison looks up like 'Nah...Oh shiz.'

Vampire: Bloodlines
Especially as experienced with a Malkavian character, where the television randomly starts talking to you and you recognise other characters for what they really are.

You have Edea as your avatar, yet you mention no Final Fantasy game, let alone the one she appeared in? I don't understand.

My favorite storyline by far is Final Fantasy VIII (of which Edea was a main character), but I also really like the Mass Effect series, and most of the FF storylines. The Longest Journey and Syberia are cool.

The Mass Effect Trilogy

Mass Effect.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and IV: Oblivion. I did feel that Oblivion suffered the same problem as Fallout 3 and was a lot more black and white with a forced story route. After New Vegas I have high hopes for Skyrim.
Fallout 1/2/3/NV
Assassins Creed.
Fable
Silent Hill II and IV: The Room.

I was going to put Final Fantasy down, problem is I can’t decide between VII , VIII or IX, and it’s been a long, long time since I’ve played any of them. Edea was a favourite character for a long while, though.

Hands down, Fallout 2 has the best, most adaptable video game story ever...

Hell, the 'chapter' on New Reno is better/more involved than the plots of most other games. The Vault City/Gecko questline is also good and challenging. I never could get that one to turn out right in the ending slides!

They don't write games like that any more.

I like the storyline of Ray McCall in the two original Call of Juarez games.
