In about 5 billion years from now, the Sun will begin to die.

As the Sun grows old, it will expand. As the core runs out of hydrogen and then helium, the core will contact and the outer layers will expand, cool, and become less bright. It will become a red giant star in about 7.5 billion years from now, evaporating the Earth’s oceans away, and then solar radiation will blast away the hydrogen from the water. The Earth will never have oceans again. It will eventually become molten again, and possibly vaporize entirely.

After this phase, the outer layers of the Sun will continue to expand. As this happens, the core will contract; the helium atoms in the core will fuse together, forming carbon atoms and releasing energy. The core will then be stable since the carbon atoms are not further compressible.

Then the outer layers of the Sun drift off into space, forming a planetary nebula (a planetary nebula has nothing to do with planets), exposing the core.

Most of its mass will go to the nebula. The remaining Sun will cool and shrink; it will eventually be only a few thousand miles in diameter!

The star is now a white dwarf, a stable star with no nuclear fuel. It radiates its left-over heat for billions of years. When its heat is all dispersed, it will be a cold, dark black dwarf - essentially a dead star (perhaps replete with diamonds, highly compressed carbon).

There will be nothing left of the Earth but a tenuous cloud of vapor wafting its way through the universe for all eternity.

Impressive description. Astronomy a special interest of yours?

As far as the shorter term effect of the world ending for man. I see the potential for nuclear disaster, too many random opportunities exist, and people aren't getting any saner in the world. Other than that we seem to be at a tipping point of sorts, with population, economies, and subsistence.

There are so many of us though spread so far in the world, some will likely survive and adapt through most manmade disasters, unless a massive nuclear strike were to occur. Seems more likely we would have random nuclear disasters, potentially caused by terrorism that might set off a number of events that create chaos in the developed world.

I think a true sudden apocalypse for man, would possibly be a galactic object striking the earth, as was speculated to end the reign of the dinosaurs. Could be a hundred, thousand, or million years though, before that might happen. Plenty of other terrestrial events could cause many deaths, but we are spread out so far, I think we would survive as a species for most of these potential events.

My general opinion is, overall for man, relatively speaking, it is probably about as good as it's going to get in the era we are currently in.

I find that rather poetic.

Jesus will return and challenge the formidable Russians to a game of Ultimate Dodgeball. Fearing divine tricks and miracles, the Russians tempt Jesus with prostitutes and really cool buildings that look like onions. Unfazed, Jesus turns water into vodka. The Russians are unable to resist and stumble drunkenly as Jesus picks them off one by one.

Infuriated by the defeat, Vladimir Putin shuts off the gas to Jesus' apartment. Jesus receives an eviction notice sealed with seven scratch 'n sniff stickers. Upon removal of the fourth sticker (strawberry, yum!) four gigantic, evil men emerge riding massive, colorful My Little Ponies and unleash destruction upon the world. The ponies s**t rainbow sherbet everywhere until the Earth is covered and nothing else remains.

Dang, you beat me to it! :x

Anyways... This is my version of the apocalypse: All the video game systems in the world disappear. In a boredom inflicted panic, man-kind goes on a rampage and destroys all man made material. We are left with nothing but a bunch of rubble, and we all die in caves after mutated toads spit poison on us. It's rather shocking, if you think about it. 8O

Hi, um, isn't it spelled apoc'A'lypse? Don't EVEN try to catch me for asking if 'IT' is spelled apoc'A'lypse....y'all know what I mean!! Anyhow,if enough humans are transported to the comet's tail (remember Heaven's Gate?), or wake up on Jupiter when we die, ready for a different existance, or are in Nirvana or Heaven or the other 2 places, if you've read the first book of Enoch, there may not be enough of us still here to even bury each other! Sylkat, who just hopes that Hinduism doesn't hve it right; I'm not sure I want to be someone else, I'm just figuring MYSELF out! 8O

When the OP posed this question, I thought he was referring to the physical world, not just human civilization.

[opinion=speculative]

I suspect that as the human population grows, its capability to provide food, water, and basic health care for each person will diminish exponentially, and civilization as we know it will fall due to famine, drouth, and global pandemic. Ironically, human desire for procreation will eventually lead to a cataclysmic reduction in human population - possibly the elimination of all human life.

FWIW this is not quite correct; the Sun will become a red giant in 5 billion years, but the lifetime of red giants is very short, only on the order of millions of years. By 7.5 billion years the Sun will long have been a white dwarf.
