My son who is 5 is currently awaiting an assessment for being on the spectrum here in the UK.

About a month ago we were told it would take a year, we've been surprised to find next week he has been requested for the pediatrician part of his assessment.

There's no detail what it involves and whilst we expect a lot of questions about his development history and some tests for motor skills we don't really know what to expect. Web searches are not throwing up much detail.
Anybody help with relevant experience?

I'm also surprised a little that it wouldn't all be done in a similar time scale but I suppose different factors can be collated at different times.

As an aside his fine motor skills and gross motor skills seem perfectly normal to us..I'm particularly impressed how a few sessions of homework has seen his handwriting skills develop quickly.

Here it was a two hour interview with a pediatrician, a child psychologist and a speech language specialist. Two would be asking us questions while the other one did tests or tried things with my son. Later they came and visited us at home and observed him, then another time they went and observed him at the Kindy. Then they wrote a report, and then we went back to meet with them minus our son and they went through the report with us and explained what their findings were.

It varies so much from area to area that the best thing to do would be to contact the paediatrician's office and ask them to tell you what will be involved.

I'm in Scotland, Glasgow area, and it was the community paediatrician who formally referred my son for an autism assessment, then we waited for 14 months for that. However, during that time he was first triaged, then assessed by the community speech and language therapists, assigned a therapist and had a number of accommodations put into place at school.

Really, you need to ask the people who are able to give you an answer. We're all just guessing.
