Yo, I'm Asian American and proud of my culture, but there doesn't seem to be many of us represented in the autistic movement. Same with my African American brothers. That's why I'm taking a survey of people's ethnicities.

Doesn't seem to be many options on there Tali, and this is an international forum. For the record, I'm mixed - English, Irish and Afro-Caribbean. :)

race, an imposed idea that there are distinct diffrences between sects of people that transend thought or reason.

As far as I am aware Tali's poll relates to ethnicity, which is not necessarily dependent upon race UltimApe - you will note that one of the categories in the poll is 'Hispanic', which covers all races. Biologically, race may be a redundant concept, but socially and culturally it has relevance to how people view themselves and others. These cultural and social differences are real, and form part of the basis for group identity and discrimination. Even though many of us feel separated from mainstream culture and norms as autistics, our ethnic heritage still colours our outlook more than many of us would like to admit, while some wear their ethnicity as a badge of pride.

I am a bit puzzled as the poll seems to be aimed at Americans only, but for the record I am white and British. However, my ancestry also includes Romanian Jewish and even a touch of Malay. And heaven knows what else; but is it important?

Wow, this board certainly is demographically different from the people with whom I normally associate. Most of my friends are Black or Asian (both South and East) and a few are Puerto Rican/Dominican.

I've lived all my life in Fair Lawn, NJ...my brothers were raised here as well.

My mom is from Haifa, Israel and my dad is from Holon, Israel...I have dual citizenship, and I've been there 3 times.

My grandparents are all from Poland, except my mom's mom who's from the Czech Republic...they're all Holacaust survivors, and both of my grandfathers are now dead.

You have 3 parents?

I think that's what this means.. If we're talking about way back generations everyone would be about 16 different things.

And a little Mexican. Explains my love for chimichangas.

Not quite what I meant, I have two, but one has parents of different origins... and I agree that going way way back most people will find a mix of all sorts.

My dad is English. My mum is Irish and Irish on her mother's side, Irish and English/Afro-Caribbean on her father's. Hope that makes more sense. I have much more English and Irish than Afro-Caribbean, and am generally taken for Mediterranean or sometimes South Asian from my appearance. :)
