When you have a bad addiction to something like smoking, how do you over come it?

I don't know, in my grandmothers case she never did. I miss her very much.

But in her case, she had done it 20-30 years before I was born even.

Reason you're quitting the addiction I guess would have to be stronger than the addiction itself.

I got bored with smoking pot and just-- quit. I was completely chronic. That became an occasional user. That became haven't touched the stuff in years.

Now, if I ever manage to quit smoking cigarettes and swearing like a sailor, or stop using the Internet for s**ts and giggles, I'll tell you how to deliberately and intentionally beat an addiction.

Willpower and perseverance.

Perseverance we're good at-- trouble with Aspies and habits is setting up a new routine. The more we change, the more peevish we tend to get.

In my case, I think quitting cigarettes will require throwing the telephone in the river.

Replace it with something good ... and no, that is not as simple as it sounds. However, the idea is to learn why the effect of something undesirable is being desired, and to then find something more desirable to fulfill that specific need.

Compromise the habbit - understand that it creates more problems than it solves.. Read some about the damage it does to you. It is disgusting. There is unfortunately no easy way out.. But the change is worth everyting. Get to roots of the problem and deal with that/fill the void with something healthy. Create some kind of ownership for yourself, renew bonds with people, seek professional help however shallow it might seem. Accept that you have already died and start all over. Cold turkey might work for some but it usually doesn't. Try your best to eat/sleep well etc, keep emotional balance. The latter is the most difficult.. I was a heavy smoker for way too long so at some point I just had enough. Exercise really helps b/c you can see effects right away. Getting more oxygen in improves health significantly and then there is no turning back. Addiction destroys one as a person.. Our brain sucks, doesn't it. I don't know why but I have such an addictive personality.. Which can be turned into a good thing as well which I am trying to do.
Sincerely wish you good luck.

Well, i did some illegal stuff back then, but to tell the truth, if you want to kick off addiction you should satisfy the "novelty seeking" part of your brain, the more new things you do or try, will stimulate you and take your mind off addiction, addiction is repetitive behavior in one way or another, so find something you like, it might be a hobby, sports, going out, reading a new book, taking some classes at college or just traveling, it work wonders!
